Backend Developer, AI

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colombia, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and enhance scalable backend services and APIs utilizing Node.js, TypeScript, and Express.js.

• Take full responsibility for technical solutions from design and implementation to deployment, observability, and production support.

• Contribute to backend architecture along with architectural and technical design decisions.

• Identify, prioritize, and resolve technical debt.

• Implement software design principles and patterns considering context and trade-offs.

• Define application boundaries and ensure separation of concerns across services, business logic, and persistence layers.

• Design and optimize PostgreSQL schemas, queries, indexes, migrations, and transactional workflows.

• Create robust financial workflows that encompass idempotency, concurrency, consistency, retries, failure handling, and reconciliation.

• Develop and maintain REST APIs and integrations with both internal systems and external providers.

• Create asynchronous and event-driven workflows.

• Build reliable, scalable, resilient, secure, and high-performance systems.

• Work with AWS infrastructure and cloud services in production environments.

• Enhance production visibility through logging, metrics, tracing, monitoring, and alerting.

• Investigate production incidents, conduct root-cause analysis, and implement sustainable solutions.

• Uphold engineering quality through automated testing, code reviews, documentation, and continuous refactoring.

• Utilize AI-assisted engineering tools for development, testing, debugging, code review, and productivity enhancement.

• Challenge technical decisions and elevate engineering standards.

• Share knowledge and enhance the engineering team’s technical prowess.

• Collaborate with Product, QA, Data, Platform, and engineering teams to convert business requirements into technical solutions.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of professional backend engineering experience, with substantial experience in building and operating production systems.

• Extensive hands-on experience with Node.js and TypeScript in production settings.

• Familiarity with Express.js or similar backend frameworks.

• Experience with Python and knowledge of backend frameworks such as FastAPI, Django, or similar is highly valued.

• Strong understanding of software architecture, design principles, and design patterns, including their trade-offs and appropriate use cases.

• Deep knowledge of relational databases and PostgreSQL, covering data modeling, transactions, indexing, query optimization, migrations, and performance.

• Experience with ORMs and persistence patterns, aware of both their advantages and limitations.

• Profound understanding of API design, authentication, authorization, versioning, security, and third-party integrations.

• Experience in designing systems for failure scenarios, including retries, duplicate events, partial failures, race conditions, and external-service degradation.

• Solid comprehension of distributed systems and asynchronous processing.

• Experience with automated testing at various levels, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing.

• Production experience with AWS or similar cloud infrastructure.

• Familiarity with CI/CD, containers, and modern software delivery practices.

• Strong understanding of observability and production troubleshooting.

• Ability to analyze architectural alternatives, recognize trade-offs, and clearly articulate technical decisions.

• Strong ownership, problem-solving, and communication skills.

• Capability to work autonomously on complex technical problems while effectively collaborating with the broader team.

• Experience in fintech, payments, lending, banking, or other highly transactional environments is a plus.

• Background in building systems where financial correctness and data integrity are crucial is advantageous.

• Experience with event-driven architectures, queues, messaging systems, and asynchronous processing is beneficial.

• Familiarity with AWS services such as Lambda, ECS/EKS, SQS, SNS, EventBridge, RDS, S3, and CloudWatch is desirable.

• Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code, such as Terraform or CloudFormation, is a plus.

• Experience with high-volume transactional systems and distributed architectures is advantageous.

• Expertise in implementing idempotency, outbox patterns, concurrency control, reconciliation processes, and fault-tolerant workflows is a plus.

• Familiarity with observability platforms like Datadog, Sentry, or similar tools is beneficial.

• Understanding of DDD, Clean Architecture, Hexagonal Architecture, or similar architectural methodologies is a plus.

• Experience using modern AI coding assistants, agents, and AI-native development workflows is an advantage.

• Knowledge of LLMs, tool calling, MCP, agentic workflows, or AI integrations is a plus.
