Authorized Special Status Species Field Biologist, CBB, QCB, WSP, SKR

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New Mexico.

📋 Description

• Perform protocol and pre-construction surveys and monitoring for Crotch’s Bumble Bee and Quino checkerspot butterfly.

• Conduct surveys and monitoring for western spadefoot, including the implementation of exclusionary fencing, artificial watering, and relocation efforts.

• Execute trapping surveys and monitoring for Stephen’s kangaroo rat, along with exclusionary fencing, trapping, and relocation.

• Undertake general wildlife and botanical surveys, encompassing vegetation and habitat mapping.

• Identify and document both native and non-native flora and fauna in the field.

• Carry out additional surveys for special-status species in accordance with established protocols or guidelines.

• Implement avian nesting surveys and monitor avian mortality.

• Assist with pre-construction surveys and provide construction monitoring support.

• Aid in environmental compliance monitoring efforts.

• Supervise restoration crew activities and assess the performance of restoration vegetation.

• Collaborate with team members and manage work schedules.

• Utilize electronic data collection techniques in the field; manage, interpret, and analyze the gathered data.

• Conduct fieldwork autonomously and collaboratively in inland and desert environments, including challenging terrain.

• Operate under the guidance of a senior project manager or senior-level team member.

• Ensure that assigned tasks remain on schedule and within budget.

• Report compliance concerns to project or construction managers.

• Clarify resource project requirements for compliance and construction teams.

• Foster a culture of safety and adherence to Safe Work Plans.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as biology or ecology.

• A minimum of 4 years of pertinent experience or equivalent education and experience in southern California ecoregions focused on listed-species surveys.

• Preferred training and/or experience in conducting surveys for listed species native to southern California.

• A valid US Driver's License and verification of pre-employment driving record are required.

• US Citizenship is mandatory.

• Prior consulting experience is preferred.

• Proven experience in conducting biological surveys and/or environmental compliance monitoring and biological construction oversight.

• Familiarity with implementing USFWS biological opinions or Habitat Conservation Plans, CDFW incidental take permits, and/or CEQA Mitigation Monitoring and Reporting Programs.

• Experience or approval as a biological monitor/designated biologist for Crotch’s Bumble Bee, Quino checkerspot butterfly, western spadefoot, and/or Stephen’s kangaroo rat.

• Preferred 10(A)(1)(a) permit and survey/monitoring experience for Quino checkerspot butterfly and/or Stephen’s kangaroo rat.

• At least 40 calendar nights conducting small mammal live-trapping surveys and managing at least 40 individual Stephens’ kangaroo rat.

• Experience with exclusion fencing for salvaging and excluding small mammals and/or executing small mammal translocations.

• Significant field experience conducting western spadefoot surveys and monitoring, including visual and vocal identification, handling, translocation, and all life stages.

• Extensive field experience with Crotch’s bumble bee surveys and monitoring.

• Knowledge of wildlife and plant species specific to southern California.

• Willingness and flexibility to support multiple projects.

• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.

• Strong organizational and proactive communication abilities.

• Experience with electronic data collection tools, including Fulcrum and Field Maps.

• Field experience with southern California special-status species and an understanding of regulatory requirements.

• CDFW Scientific Collecting Permit and/or Memorandum of Understanding for specified southern California state-listed species.

• Capability to drive a 4-wheel-drive vehicle across challenging terrain.

• Strong leadership and diplomatic skills.

• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

• Familiarity with mitigation, monitoring, and reporting programs.

• Experience with construction-associated transmission and/or utility projects.

• Understanding of federal Endangered Species Act, California Endangered Species Act, NEPA, CEQA, and Clean Water Act regulatory and permitting requirements.
