Associate Hydrologist / Principal Hydrologist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Oversee the delivery, assessment, and quality control of hydrological evaluations for flood risk and water environment initiatives.

• Guide and facilitate the professional growth of junior team members.

• Enhance and refine technical methods, tools, and approaches.

• Draft fee proposals and assist in project planning and resource allocation.

• Establish and nurture trustworthy relationships with clients, regulators, and essential stakeholders.

• Participate in business development efforts and aid in the expansion of flood risk and water environment services.

• Perform desk-based technical tasks alongside occasional site visits, catchment inspections, and stakeholder meetings throughout the UK.

• Collaborate with colleagues in Environmental and Earth Sciences, Planning, ESIA, Engineering, and Global Advisory.

• Deliver projects for both public and private sector clients, including developers, Local Flood Authorities, water companies, and environmental regulators.

• Contribute to the development and enhancement of the company’s hydrology capabilities.

⛳️ Requirements

• Significant consultancy experience in leading, reviewing, and approving hydrological assessments for flood risk and water environment projects.

• A degree in Civil Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science, or a related field.

• Chartered status or actively pursuing chartership with CIWEM, ICE, or a comparable professional organization.

• Extensive experience in conducting hydrological assessments to support flood risk and hydraulic modeling projects.

• In-depth knowledge of UK hydrological methodologies and industry standards, including FEH, ReFH2, WINFAP, and LowFlows.

• Proficient in deriving design flows and hydrological inputs for fluvial modeling and flood risk assessments.

• Experience in preparing and reviewing Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs) and Strategic Flood Risk Assessments (SFRAs).

• Solid understanding of UK flood risk legislation, planning directives, and climate change considerations.

• Familiarity with liaising with the Environment Agency, SEPA, Natural Resources Wales, LLFAs, and other crucial stakeholders.

• Competence in using GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro or QGIS.

• Exceptional skills in technical reporting, reviewing, and quality assurance.

• Experience conducting Culvert Assessment Studies following CIRIA guidelines.

• Track record of mentoring and developing junior personnel.

• Strong skills in project management, stakeholder engagement, and client relationship management.

• Ability to juggle multiple projects, priorities, and client relationships effectively.

• Willingness to undertake occasional site visits, catchment inspections, and stakeholder meetings across the UK.

• Desirable: experience in developing hydrological inputs for 1D and 2D hydraulic models using Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, or InfoWorks ICM.

• Desirable: experience in preparing surface water drainage strategies and SuDS assessments.

• Desirable: involvement in natural flood management, river restoration, or environmental assessment projects.

• Desirable: previous experience in line management, pastoral care, or personnel management roles.
