This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in District of Columbia, +1 more state.
• Act as the main legal advisor for daily operations concerning intellectual property on a global scale.
• Offer legal guidance regarding trademarks, copyrights, licensing, brand protection, trade secrets, advertising, publishing, and related commercial affairs.
• Create, review, and negotiate licenses, assignments, permissions, coexistence agreements, settlement agreements, and other documents related to intellectual property.
• Evaluate and negotiate general commercial contracts within the scope of delegated authority.
• Counsel Marketing, Product, Education, Research, Technology, Publishing, and other departments on intellectual property risks and obligations.
• Develop guidelines, training materials, and governance playbooks for business partners and licensees.
• Manage trademark clearance and routine prosecution and opposition issues in collaboration with external counsel.
• Offer advice on copyright registrations, licensing, and related protective measures.
• Assess potential infringement cases, evaluate legal and business risks, and suggest appropriate responses.
• Provide counsel on the intellectual property implications of artificial intelligence, digital content, emerging technologies, and new product development.
• Work together with the IP Paralegal and external counsel to facilitate intellectual property protection and management.
• Assist in the formulation and execution of a new global intellectual property strategy.
• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA).
• Active legal license to practice in at least one US state, with eligibility for admission in Virginia.
• Extensive legal experience within a law firm, in-house legal department, or a combination of both.
• Significant expertise in intellectual property law, especially copyright.
• Experience in advising on copyright, content protection, and licensing issues.
• Proficient in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial agreements and contracts related to intellectual property.
• Experience in managing external counsel and overseeing intellectual property prosecution and enforcement efforts.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. and international intellectual property laws and practices.
• Preferred experience in trademark advisory or portfolio management.
• Preferred background in advising on digital content, technology, artificial intelligence, or emerging intellectual property challenges.
• Experience supporting multinational organizations is preferred.
