Archaeological Field Technician

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Conduct archaeological surveys, excavations, and monitoring activities.

• Provide support for various archaeological initiatives across California on an on-call or as-needed basis.

• Travel to project sites for multiple consecutive days as required.

• Engage in outdoor fieldwork on uneven terrain and under extreme weather conditions.

• Participate in meetings both in person and virtually.

• Communicate with colleagues and clients via phone.

• Utilize computers, phones, printers, GPS devices, cameras, tablets, and ESRI Collector during project tasks.

• Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology or Anthropology.

• A valid driver’s license that is current.

• Capability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle.

• Eligibility for vehicle insurance and/or current auto insurance coverage.

• Active personal automobile liability insurance must be in place by the first day of employment.

• Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening.

• Ability to clear a background check.

• Experience with archaeological field techniques, including pedestrian surveys, testing/evaluation, and monitoring.

• Proficiency in operating GPS equipment, cameras, and tablets.

• Physical capability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 lbs. and to walk or hike for extended periods.

• Understanding and readiness to safely work in challenging weather and environmental conditions.

• Willingness to travel to project locations for several consecutive days.

• Completion of an accredited field school certification.

• Previous experience in archaeological surveys within California or surrounding areas.

• Familiarity with recording various site and isolate types in the region.

• Knowledge of and experience with ESRI Collector.

• Ability to bend, squat, climb ladders, and lift up to 35 lbs. unassisted or 50 lbs. with assistance from a team.
