
Accounting and Payroll Specialist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Manage bi-weekly payroll processing for the PETA Foundation, which includes updating payroll deductions, accruals, and ensuring accurate tax withholding.
• Calculate final payments, taking into account accrued vacation time, and update payroll records for employees who have been terminated.
• Handle internal payroll related to accounts payable.
• Assist with the review of timecards for compliance with labor laws.
• Provide support regarding multi-state payroll tax issues.
• Keep up-to-date with payroll regulations and ensure adherence to Federal and State laws.
• Address and resolve payroll inquiries from employees.
• Execute bi-weekly and semi-annual 401k responsibilities, including account reconciliations and conducting enrollment meetings.
• Conduct monthly reconciliations of the general ledger.
• Generate reports for annual financial audits for the PETA Foundation and its affiliated organizations.
• Carry out year-end reconciliations of employee data and provide necessary information to third-party entities.
• Create and distribute payroll and ledger-detail reports.
• Train new staff members at PETA and the PETA Foundation on payroll procedures.
• Record payroll-related adjustments and journal entries in the general ledger.
• Undertake additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
• Completion of college-level coursework in accounting.
• A minimum of five years of experience in industry or public accounting.
• Prior experience with Paylocity or other payroll systems is preferred.
• Experience with multi-state payroll taxation is required.
• Familiarity with Sage 100 or similar accounting software is advantageous.
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, is essential.
• Demonstrated self-motivation and the ability to work independently.
• Exceptional attention to detail along with strong organizational skills.
• Proven capability to perform well under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Effective verbal communication skills and comfort speaking in public settings are essential.
