Writing Tutor – Seasonal

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants anywhere in the world.

📋 Description

• Conduct asynchronous essay evaluations in accordance with Upswing's tutoring philosophy to enhance students' writing skills.

• Engage with students through synchronous meetings in the virtual classroom.

• Deliver comprehensive, insightful, and actionable written feedback on student essays and writing tasks.

• Employ the Socratic method, focusing on inquiry and higher-order concerns.

• Assist college students in developing their critical thinking abilities.

• Evaluate a variety of writing forms, including health sciences, argumentative essays, history, and works addressing contentious topics like politics and religion.

• Maintain active participation during the fall and spring semesters.

• Finish onboarding within approximately 2–5 business days post-hiring.

• May need to perform subject matter evaluations prior to being accepted as an academic coach.

⛳️ Requirements

• A graduate degree in English/writing, or a professional background in writing.

• A minimum of 1 year of tutoring and training experience in a college/university Writing Center.

• Experience in a Writing Center is highly preferred.

• Knowledge of tutoring methodologies and the Socratic method is essential.

• A GPA of 3.5 or higher.

• An unofficial transcript demonstrating success in a writing-intensive program is required with the application.

• A fast and reliable internet connection.

• Access to MS Word or Google Docs.

• A laptop or desktop computer.

• Willingness to commit 15–25 hours per week during peak periods, approximately from February 1 to May 15.

• Comfort in reviewing a variety of writing, including health sciences, argumentative essays, history, and sensitive topics.

• Ability to receive biweekly payments through PayPal.

• A stable internet connection and a quiet environment for virtual work.

• May need to complete subject matter evaluations before being accepted as an academic coach.
