VP, Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Define and advocate for a multi-year technology strategy and architectural vision that aligns with business goals and revenue growth.

• Collaborate with Product Management to shape product strategy, prioritize roadmaps, determine technical direction, assess commercial value, and ensure effective delivery.

• Oversee end-to-end engineering delivery aligned with the product roadmap utilizing agile methodologies.

• Enhance and maintain platform quality, performance, security, and resilience.

• Provide executive oversight for distributed systems, high-performance Java, concurrency, streaming, and data structures.

• Assess and integrate emerging technologies into existing systems.

• Manage the engineering budget, evaluate technology investment ROI, and oversee resource allocation.

• Serve as a steward for Hazelcast’s open-source core, balancing the expectations of the open-source community with the needs of commercial customers.

• Advocate for Hazelcast within the open-source and real-time data ecosystems and establish strategic partnerships.

• Transform user feedback into engineering priorities effectively.

• Ensure reliability across Hazelcast’s multi-language client ecosystem, facilitating seamless upgrades.

• Champion the developer and operator experience, enhance documentation, ensure clarity in releases, and engage with the community.

• Lead and manage a globally distributed engineering team.

• Develop organizational structure, plan headcount, create leadership benches, establish succession plans, and outline career paths.

• Coach and nurture engineering directors and managers.

• Ensure team alignment, empowerment, feedback, and performance management are prioritized.

• Collaborate with the CEO and C-level executives on engineering performance, risks, and opportunities.

• Sponsor key enterprise accounts and participate in high-stakes C-level prospect meetings with Sales.

• Inspire advanced developers globally and encourage contributions to open-source projects.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 12 years of progressive leadership experience in software engineering.

• At least 7 years of experience operating at the VP, SVP, or CTO level.

• Preferably have experience in a B2B enterprise software or platform company.

• Proven ability to foster a product-led culture and drive commercial outcomes through engineering excellence.

• Capability to manage substantial departmental budgets and optimize engineering expenditures.

• Proficient in translating complex technical decisions into business value for executive stakeholders.

• Deep understanding of complex architectures, concurrent and distributed systems, high-performance computing, and real-time data architectures.

• Expertise in balancing the expectations of the open-source community with enterprise needs.

• Experience with public API discipline, documentation standards, governance, and global developer/operator communities.

• Proven track record of scaling and leading an internationally distributed engineering organization.

• Technical foundation in Java, concurrency, networking, data streaming, SQL, distributed data stores, and data grids.

• Ability to engage deeply with Principal Engineers and Architects on complex technical designs.

• Expertise in modern agile methodologies and continuous delivery pipelines.

• Customer-centric approach and comfort in an open-kitchen, GTM-aligned environment.

• Exceptional verbal, written, and presentation skills.

• Ability to influence across Product, Engineering, Sales, and Marketing.

• A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field is preferred; a Master's or equivalent advanced degree is also desirable.
