Urban Planner / Designer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colorado, +2 more states.

📋 Description

• Assist in the creation of small area plans, policies, and strategies for downtown revitalization, site reuse, and site plans.

• Engage in reuse scenarios that encompass mixed-use developments, transportation, economic growth, housing, open spaces, public realm enhancements, adaptive reuse, and infill projects.

• Conduct research, gather data, and perform both qualitative and quantitative analysis for redevelopment initiatives.

• Review and integrate demographic, real estate, and consumer spending information.

• Develop graphs, charts, tables, and various forms of data visualizations.

• Contribute to the drafting of reports, community engagement materials, conceptual designs, market analyses, best practices, presentations, and fact sheets.

• Assist in outreach and engagement efforts with stakeholders, including both in-person and virtual community activities such as charrettes, workshops, and meetings.

• Communicate directly with clients at local, state, and federal levels.

• Provide technical support to communities and non-profit organizations throughout the U.S. on contaminated site redevelopment, adaptive reuse, community revitalization, engagement, and economic development.

• Primarily assist programs under the EPA’s Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization (OBLR).

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in urban planning, urban design, or a related technical field.

• At least 2 years of experience in supporting technical projects in community revitalization and economic development.

• Background in brownfields site redevelopment or comparable infill development.

• Willingness to travel as necessary.

• Understanding of current planning and policy trends related to land use, community and economic development, multi-modal transportation, real estate, climate change adaptation strategies, and affordable housing.

• Strong analytical abilities to synthesize demographic, economic, market, and workforce data into actionable insights.

• Familiarity with community engagement methods and experience in public speaking.

• Team-oriented individual with a proactive attitude who is eager to learn new subjects and can manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.

• Proficient in conducting quantitative analyses using Excel, R, or other relevant software.

• Proven experience in Adobe Creative Suite is essential.

• Exceptional written and oral communication skills.

• Submission of a work sample or portfolio is required at the time of application.

• A Master’s degree in urban planning, urban design, or a related technical field is preferred.

• Knowledge of spatial analytics (ArcGIS), drafting, and 3-D modeling software (CAD, Rhino, and/or Sketchup) along with rendering software (Lumion and/or Enscape) is advantageous.

• Familiarity with general building codes, zoning regulations, ADA Standards for Accessible Design, and other applicable standards is preferred.

• Experience in multi-family housing, mixed-use, and community-oriented uses and programming; experience with adaptive reuse and landscape and public realm design is a plus.

• AICP certification is desirable but not mandatory.
