Third Officer – Maritime Operations

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.

📋 Description

• Assist the Master and Chief Officer in ensuring safe and efficient operations of the vessel.

• Carry out Officer of the Watch (OOW) responsibilities in line with COLREGs and vessel protocols.

• Aid in the safe navigation, maneuvering, and operational readiness of the vessel.

• Keep nautical charts, navigational publications, and necessary corrections up to date.

• Operate and maintain electronic navigation systems and GMDSS communications equipment.

• Monitor Maritime Safety Information (MSI), weather updates, and navigational alerts.

• Maintain deck logbooks and all required operational documentation.

• Assist in the application of the vessel's Safety Management System (SMS).

• Conduct and support vessel inspections, drills, and emergency preparedness activities.

• Facilitate familiarization training for newly assigned personnel in accordance with STCW standards.

• Monitor and implement planned maintenance tasks within designated areas of responsibility.

• Complete checklists, risk assessments, and operational records.

• Utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and uphold safe working practices.

• Exercise sound judgment during emergencies and inform vessel leadership of significant issues.

• Promote cross-departmental coordination between deck, engineering, and operational teams.

• Provide oversight, mentorship, and coordination for junior deck personnel as needed.

• Perform additional tasks that support vessel operations and mission objectives.

⛳️ Requirements

• Possess a valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) appropriate for the position.

• Hold valid STCW endorsements and necessary maritime certifications.

• Experience serving as Officer of the Watch on operational vessels.

• Familiarity with navigational watch-standing protocols, COLREGs, and bridge operations.

• Experience in operating navigation and communication equipment.

• Capability to work rotational schedules in maritime settings.

• Strong communication, organizational, and decision-making abilities.

• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary maritime team.

• U.S. citizenship is required.

• Ability to obtain and sustain a Department of Defense security clearance.

• Willingness to support rotational or extended underway operations as necessary.

• Capability to function in an operational maritime and shipboard setting.

• Ability to stand watch for long durations, climb ladders, and work in physically demanding conditions.
