
Tax Auditor β Utility User Tax

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
β’ Carry out tax and regulatory assessments on behalf of clients.
β’ Review functions to identify, rectify, and document any deficiencies in client tax or fee revenue.
β’ Conduct examinations of taxpayer records for compliance under the guidance of supervisors and management.
β’ Enhance understanding of tax legislation.
β’ Research examination leads and arrange appointments.
β’ Prepare for examinations by analyzing tax returns, previous audit reports, and other relevant data.
β’ Meet with taxpayers to explain examination procedures, address inquiries, and gather necessary information and documentation.
β’ Review and validate business and financial records.
β’ Create supporting documents for adjustments and calculate assessments.
β’ Review and discuss findings with taxpayers or their representatives, clarifying how tax laws and rulings impact their operations.
β’ Respond to taxpayer inquiries.
β’ Participate in hearings for disputed cases as necessary.
β’ Conduct closing conferences and articulate the relevant laws and facts that justify changes in tax liability.
β’ Strive to achieve consensus on findings outlined in reports.
β’ Execute additional duties as assigned.
β’ Work diligently to complete all tasks.
β’ Travel as needed.
β’ Bachelor's Degree in Accounting.
β’ At least 2-3 years of relevant professional experience.
β’ Preferred knowledge or experience in state and local taxation.
β’ CPA or CIA certification is desirable but not mandatory.
β’ Professional background with experience in corporate accounting and finance is preferred.
β’ Experience with state or local revenue departments, compliance audits, and audit defense is advantageous.
β’ Strong knowledge of accounting principles along with solid analytical skills.
β’ Capability to organize, plan, and lead effectively.
β’ Professional demeanor, customer service-oriented, tactful, reliable, and adaptable.
β’ Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
β’ Ability to collaborate effectively with personnel across all levels of the organization.
β’ Proficient in Accounting Systems and Microsoft Office.
β’ Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including diplomacy, flexibility, and reliability.
β’ Capacity to make decisions in uncertain situations.
β’ Ability to identify potential issues proactively.
β’ Competence in understanding taxpayer and client constraints regarding information and records, and diplomatically addressing these challenges.
β’ Must be capable of maintaining a stationary position for the majority of the day.
β’ Regularly operates a computer and other office productivity equipment.
β’ Occasionally moves within the office environment.
β’ Frequently communicates via telephone.
