This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +1 more country.
• Lead the Field Safety initiatives at Waabi by creating issue-escalation processes, addressing fleet concerns in the field, and managing incident responses.
• Define and implement operational readiness testing for autonomous vehicle operations, generating evidence within the readiness framework.
• Collaborate with operations and software teams to establish protocols for both standard and exceptional scenarios, such as severe weather, sensor degradation, connectivity disruptions, and trip interruptions.
• Develop processes for continuous field safety monitoring while assisting in the creation of leading and lagging safety indicators and necessary tools.
• Examine operational trends and previous field incidents to promote systemic safety improvements throughout development and operations.
• Aid the Operations team in creating and executing incident response training and operational preparedness initiatives.
• Liaise with regulatory agencies and engage in discussions regarding industry standards related to the validation of autonomous vehicle operational safety.
• Bachelor's degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline; an advanced degree is preferred.
• Over 7 years of experience in the development, validation, or operation of safety-critical systems.
• Profound understanding of systems engineering principles, including requirements decomposition, V&V processes, and hazard analysis techniques (HAZOP, FMEA, FTA, STPA, etc.).
• Knowledge of relevant safety standards (ISO 26262, ISO 21448/SOTIF, UL 4600).
• Experience in monitoring safety metrics and designing/executing test plans for complex autonomous or robotic systems.
• Exceptional technical communication skills with the capability to present intricate safety arguments to a variety of stakeholders.
• Strong project management abilities with a talent for coordinating across multiple technical teams.
• Proven track record of making high-stakes engineering decisions with incomplete information.
• Direct experience in the safety validation or deployment of autonomous vehicles (bonus).
• Previous experience in trucking, logistics, or commercial vehicle operations (bonus).
• Experience with operational safety management systems (bonus).
• Familiarity with regulatory frameworks for autonomous vehicles, such as FMVSS, SAE standards, and state/provincial regulations (bonus).
