Staff Software Engineer – Java, Spring

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Croatia, +2 more countries.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the architecture and technical roadmap for Duetto's Java/Spring monolith.

• Spearhead domain decomposition, establish service boundaries, and lead initiatives for platform modernization.

• Design and implement event-driven data flows utilizing AWS Kinesis, SQS/SNS, and Spring Cloud Stream.

• Enhance the GraphQL API layer and backend services that support hotel pricing, inventory, and demand management across over 80 PMS/CRS integrations.

• Manage and optimize MongoDB, Redis (Redisson), and PostgreSQL for enhanced performance and reliability.

• Improve platform observability through the use of OpenTelemetry, Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, and Sentry instrumentation.

• Innovate AI-augmented engineering workflows with Claude Code, Claude MPM, and Duetto's proprietary MCP server platform.

• Guide architectural decisions by creating design documents and RFCs.

• Develop patterns for schema evolution, contract testing, and observability.

• Mentor engineers across teams in the US and EU, raising the standards for code quality and system design.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of experience in building production backend systems at scale.

• In-depth knowledge of Java, Spring Framework, Gradle, and JVM performance optimization.

• Proven production experience with event-driven architectures, including AWS Kinesis, Kafka, or similar technologies.

• Strong foundation in system design principles: domain decomposition, modularity, and schema evolution.

• Hands-on AWS production experience with EKS/ECS, S3, SQS/SNS, and IAM.

• A demonstrated ability to influence architectural decisions and draft design documents without formal authority.

• Proficiency in Python for tooling, automation, or data workflows is a plus.

• Experience with MongoDB at scale, particularly in indexing, aggregation pipelines, and sharding, is advantageous.

• Practical experience with AI-assisted development, LLM coding agents, prompt engineering, or MCP tooling is beneficial.

• Familiarity with evolving large monoliths into modular or service-oriented architectures is advantageous.

• Understanding of the hospitality domain, including PMS/CRS systems, rate management, or demand forecasting, is beneficial.
