Staff Software Engineer – Grading Operations

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of complex, loosely defined projects from the initial design phase through to production.

• Lead initiatives that involve multiple engineering teams.

• Develop backend services, APIs, and data models for internal applications related to grading and authentication.

• Work with containerized .NET applications, serverless APIs, and Python-based background processing jobs.

• Choose suitable architectures for new projects.

• Design and implement robust event-driven and asynchronous systems capable of handling high-volume operational data.

• Mentor engineers by conducting design reviews, code reviews, and fostering problem-solving techniques.

• Contribute to frontend development utilizing JavaScript, TypeScript, and Vue.js.

• Collaborate with Product, Tech, and Operations teams to convert business requirements into technical designs.

• Diagnose issues related to data, integration, services, and UI across a large codebase.

• Engage in an on-call rotation to support services that you own.

• Document designs and record technical decisions made throughout projects.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 8 years of software engineering experience in building production applications.

• Extensive experience in backend systems alongside some practical experience in frontend development.

• At least 5 years of experience and strong proficiency in C# and .NET.

• Regular use of AI tools in software design and development, with the ability to review and take accountability for their output.

• Proven track record of successfully delivering projects with ambiguous requirements and complex designs.

• A history of mentoring skilled engineers and enhancing team design and development practices.

• Experience in designing and developing RESTful APIs and service integrations.

• Strong judgment regarding module boundaries, service decomposition, and architectural choices.

• Experience in writing and maintaining automated tests for production services.

• Solid understanding of relational databases and data modeling, including SQL Server or PostgreSQL.

• Practical experience in building and managing production cloud services.

• Familiarity with container orchestration technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, or ECS.

• Experience with serverless computing behind an API gateway.

• Experience with managed messaging and data storage solutions.

• Comfortable working within a modern frontend codebase that includes JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and component-based frameworks.

• Familiar with CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code using tools like Terraform or CloudFormation, and monitoring/observability tools like CloudWatch or Datadog.

• Ability to translate intricate Product and Operations requirements into clean, scalable systems.

• Knowledge of Agile/Scrum methodologies.

• Experience with asynchronous, event-driven, and distributed systems, particularly those functioning across regions (a plus).

• Familiarity with AWS, Python, Apache Kafka, DynamoDB, or Vue.js (a plus).

• Experience collaborating closely with Product and engaging directly with operations and business teams (a plus).

• Experience in optimizing high-volume workflows (a plus).
