Staff Software Engineer, Compute – Temporal Cloud

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Develop managed compute primitives for Temporal Cloud, ensuring clear abstractions, APIs, and extensibility across various compute providers.

• Design self-optimizing autoscaling systems incorporating signals, backstops, debouncing, and guardrails.

• Establish the boundary between Open Source Server and Cloud concerning compute capabilities.

• Architect, construct, and maintain services critical to task execution.

• Implement cloud integrations that encompass customer-account execution, IAM boundaries, secure credential management, networking limitations, quotas, and failure scenarios.

• Set SLOs, perform tracing/metrics, conduct load and failure testing, facilitate incident reviews, and continuously enhance system robustness.

• Deliver end-to-end solutions, including API design, rollout strategies, ensuring backwards compatibility, and long-term maintenance.

• Create design documents, lead reviews, provide technical guidance, and mentor team members.

• Drive cross-team platform modifications across Server, SDKs, Security, and Control Plane.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience in building distributed systems or multi-tenant platform services, covering design, implementation, and production operations.

• Strong foundational knowledge in systems, focusing on concurrency, performance, reliability, and failure-mode analysis.

• Proven track record of delivering platform primitives utilized by engineers or customers, such as APIs, control planes, or data planes.

• Experience managing SLOs, responding to incidents, and enhancing on-call performance.

• Exceptional written communication skills and the ability to evaluate trade-offs clearly.

• Proficiency in Go is advantageous.

• Familiarity with building cloud infrastructure compute platforms is a plus.

• Knowledge of IAM/security boundaries for cross-account execution models is beneficial.

• Experience in developing Kubernetes controllers/CRDs or managing heterogeneous worker fleet operations is a plus.
