Staff Software Engineer, Backend – Order Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +4 more states.

📋 Description

• Develop a technical strategy for the team over the course of a year, linking it to key business-impacting projects.

• Work in conjunction with product management, design, and analytics throughout the entire product development cycle.

• Define and promote technical solutions and operational processes to enhance team productivity.

• Manage team operations and availability, which includes monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, alerting, and on-call duties.

• Set and advocate for code review and design standards through written documentation and technical presentations.

• Cultivate team talent by providing feedback, guidance, and leading by example.

• Influence the systems that power Affirm purchases post-checkout, covering orders, captures, refunds, and settlements.

• Lead the technical strategy for a reliable and highly available post-checkout platform and future product functionalities.

• Integrate the internal platform behind Affirm’s post-checkout APIs, define domain boundaries, transition existing merchants, and facilitate future product launches.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in designing, developing, and launching scalable backend systems.

• Proficient in programming languages such as Python or Kotlin.

• Extensive experience in building highly available distributed systems.

• Familiarity with AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.

• Skilled in designing services with well-defined API boundaries, robust reliability, consistency, idempotency, and effective failure-mode handling.

• Experience in payments, commerce, ledger, or other financially sensitive fields is preferred.

• Proven track record in delivering significant features or system components, or phasing out existing functionality through technical and execution strategies.

• Capable of writing high-quality, comprehensible, and reusable code.

• Ability to navigate from low-level language principles to large-system architecture.

• Demonstrated growth and impact through soliciting and acting on feedback from peers and cross-functional teams.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with a global engineering team.

• Relevant practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline.
