Staff Backend Engineer – Platform & Domain Foundations

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Define backend architecture and domain models, including bounded contexts, aggregates, domain events, and service boundaries.

• Develop and enhance TypeScript/NestJS services utilizing Domain-Driven Design and ports-and-adapters patterns.

• Manage GraphQL API contracts, Postgres data models, and implement safe evolution patterns.

• Create dependable event-driven systems designed for durability, idempotency, retries, and the realities of distributed systems.

• Leverage an AI coding harness as a fundamental development tool, enhancing context, standards, tests, and guardrails.

• Elevate engineering quality through code reviews, testing, technical documentation, architecture diagrams, and decision records.

• Transform vague product requirements into well-structured systems in collaboration with product and engineering colleagues.

• Operate within a weekly delivery cycle, transitioning foundational work from Monday objectives to Friday demonstrations.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in building backend systems for production environments.

• Extensive expertise in TypeScript and Node.js.

• Practical experience with Domain-Driven Design, covering bounded contexts, aggregate boundaries, value objects, and domain events.

• Familiarity with hexagonal architecture and ports and adapters.

• Strong background in designing and managing GraphQL APIs.

• Insight into schema modeling, batching, N+1 problem, pagination, error semantics, and live schema evolution.

• Experience in designing event-driven and distributed systems.

• Understanding of at-least-once delivery, idempotency, ordering, retries, and transactional boundaries, including transactional outbox patterns.

• Solid relational data modeling skills and understanding of SQL fundamentals.

• Experience in schema design, live-data migrations, indexing, transaction boundaries, and intentional read/write path design.

• Familiarity with NestJS or substantial production experience in another modern Node.js backend framework such as Fastify, Express, Hono, AdonisJS, or tRPC.

• Highly skilled with AI coding tools like Claude Code or comparable agentic coding harness.

• Capacity to direct, review, and enhance AI-generated code while overseeing architecture, context, quality, and final outcomes.

• Strong instincts for testing and the capability to design testable systems.

• Ability to utilize rapid implementations or test doubles and reserve integration testing for system seams.

• Exceptional written and visual communication skills regarding technical decisions.

• Experience with architecture decision records, domain glossaries, system diagrams, data and event flows, and technical standards.

• High level of autonomy in resolving ambiguous product or technical challenges.

• Ability to maintain work-hour overlap with the US-based team until at least 1:00 PM Eastern daily.

• Strong written communication skills and the ability to provide clear context for asynchronous collaboration.
