Staff Software Engineer – Back End

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead the technical design and implementation of advanced platform features, including tenant on-ramps, schema management tools, onboarding workflows, and enhancements to developer experience.

• Set technical standards and best practices for tenant integrations, focusing on lightweight clients, native Kafka producers, and protocol-specific listeners.

• Provide direct integration support to producer and consumer teams within Veterans Affairs.

• Transform integration insights into reusable platform patterns, templates, documentation, and automated solutions.

• Collaborate with DevOps engineers to pinpoint and automate operational inefficiencies.

• Strategize and carry out technical roadmaps for intricate projects with minimal oversight.

• Work across various technologies and programming languages to comprehend integration challenges and propose solutions.

• Mitigate ambiguity and technical debt through thorough documentation, refactoring, automated testing, and system enhancements.

• Engage in planning and technical discussions with partners, product leaders, engineers, and stakeholders.

• Articulate technical decisions, trade-offs, implementation complexities, and associated risks.

• Operate independently across the platform while making informed technical choices.

• Guide engineers through code reviews, technical design discussions, and hands-on collaboration.

• Participate in technical interviews and assess engineering candidates.

• Join the on-call rotation and enhance tooling, documentation, and runbooks.

• Assist in technical demonstrations, proposals, and activities involving clients.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree along with 9+ years of professional experience in software engineering.

• Relevant years of experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.

• Proficient-level experience in at least one significant technology stack.

• Capability to independently lead intricate technical initiatives and assist teams in achieving successful outcomes.

• Solid foundation in software engineering principles.

• Proficiency in reading, understanding, and contributing across various programming languages, including Java, Ruby, Node.js, Python, and Go.

• Strong grasp of Kubernetes architecture and its underlying operations.

• Practical experience with contemporary continuous delivery tools such as Argo CD or their equivalents.

• Hands-on experience in building and maintaining CI/CD workflows using GitHub Actions or similar tools.

• Background in designing, building, or supporting distributed systems in production settings.

• Ability to convey complex technical ideas, architectural choices, and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Experience working autonomously on complex or unclear technical issues and guiding them towards practical solutions.

• Preferred: Direct experience with Apache Kafka or another distributed event-streaming platform.

• Preferred: Experience in designing or managing internal developer platforms, developer tools, or streamlined solutions.

• Preferred: Experience in supporting integrations across various engineering teams, services, or technology stacks.

• Preferred: Background in government, healthcare, or financial services.

• Preferred: Ability to collaborate across organizational barriers and foster alignment.

• Preferred: Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as FedRAMP, FISMA, ATO, or similar.
