Staff Platform Database Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Define the strategy for deploying, managing, scaling, and operating database platforms across Chainguard.

• Create an inventory of current database systems and prioritize environments that are high-impact and high-risk.

• Develop a strategic roadmap aimed at enhancing resiliency and minimizing operational risk.

• Design and implement replication, high availability, backups, disaster recovery, migrations, and capacity planning.

• Develop production-grade tooling, governance frameworks, and automated guardrails.

• Write production code that supports database deployment, management, and reliability.

• Design database systems that function across various regions and geographies, considering availability, latency, EU data residency, and sovereignty needs.

• Enhance database architecture and operational practices to minimize database-related availability incidents.

• Lead initiatives pertaining to company-wide database infrastructure.

• Author technical and architectural design documentation.

• Establish scalable standards for creating reliable, secure, performant, and maintainable systems.

• Collaborate with Dev Platform, SRE, Customer Engineering, and engineering teams to review architecture and promote consistent best practices.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in building and managing production database and platform infrastructure within modern cloud environments.

• Significant background in software engineering, infrastructure engineering, or platform engineering with a strong emphasis on database systems.

• Experience at a staff level leading intricate technical initiatives and influencing architecture across various engineering teams.

• Extensive experience in designing, building, and operating database infrastructure in production settings.

• Proficient in PostgreSQL and MySQL.

• Hands-on production experience in replication, high availability, backups and recovery, database migrations, capacity planning, and distributed databases operating across different geographies.

• Experience managing production database systems with global availability in high-scale environments.

• Familiarity with designing and operating database infrastructure in cloud environments, particularly AWS and Google Cloud.

• Strong server-side Linux skills.

• Proficient in programming with Go.

• Experience in writing production code and developing infrastructure tooling.

• Ability to assess existing systems, identify risks, and convert findings into a well-defined architecture and implementation roadmap.

• Excellent communication and cross-functional leadership skills, capable of guiding engineering teams towards unified standards and practices.

• Experience leveraging AI or automation in database operations and infrastructure workflows.
