Staff Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Take full ownership of the architecture within the team's domain from start to finish, encompassing services, data flows, integrations, and failure modes.

• Create scalable products and services that facilitate iterative and autonomous development.

• Spearhead modernization initiatives involving PHP monolith strangler patterns and transitions from Java to TypeScript services.

• Cultivate a comprehensive understanding of related systems such as grading, marketplace, CRM, payments, identity, and data/ETL.

• Establish standards for security, testing, observability, and operational excellence.

• Drive the integration of AI-assisted engineering by creating standards, guardrails, workflows, and measuring impact.

• Oversee projects of moderate scope and complexity spanning one to two quarters.

• Coordinate engineers, stakeholders, and dependencies to ensure predictable delivery.

• Strategically plan and prioritize tasks using a value-versus-cost analysis.

• Proactively identify and communicate blockers and delays to prevent unexpected surprises.

• Encourage knowledge sharing and documentation among engineering and business stakeholders.

• Build strong relationships throughout the organization.

• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through design reviews, pair programming, and constructive feedback.

• Enhance organizational AI fluency by sharing workflows, prompts, and agent configurations, along with coaching engineers.

⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 8 years of professional software engineering experience, showcasing proven technical leadership in multi-engineer, multi-quarter projects.

• Expert-level backend engineering skills in TypeScript/Node.js and/or Java.

• Proficient in TypeScript, Java 21, PHP, Python, and C#.

• Hands-on experience with React/Next.js frontends, API and service layers, relational data stores, and infrastructure.

• Demonstrated ability to modernize legacy systems while maintaining live traffic.

• In-depth expertise in PostgreSQL and MySQL, including data modeling, migrations, and performance optimization.

• Strong foundational knowledge in distributed systems: REST, GraphQL, gRPC, SQS, idempotency, and failure handling.

• Proficient in AWS production environments, particularly in ECS, Lambda, networking, and IAM.

• Familiar with infrastructure-as-code practices using AWS CDK and/or Terraform.

• Experience in elevating engineering standards through testing, observability, documentation, and incident response.

• Daily use of AI coding assistants and agentic tools, such as Claude Code, Copilot, or Cursor.

• Practical experience incorporating AI tools into CI, code review, and documentation workflows.

• Sound judgment regarding the verification, security, and limitations of AI-generated code.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills tailored to both technical and business audiences.

• Experience with frontend architecture at scale or React Native/Expo is a plus.

• Familiarity with e-commerce, marketplace, payments, or high-traffic consumer platforms is advantageous.

• Background in data platforms or applied machine learning is a plus.

• Experience in building and responsibly deploying LLM-powered features or platforms is beneficial.

• An interest in sports cards, gaming, or collectibles is a positive addition.
