Staff Software Development Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maine, +3 more states.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and deliver product experiences driven by Agentic capabilities.

• Create scalable and dependable software solutions utilizing Java, Kafka, Elasticsearch, and cloud-native platforms.

• Contribute to architectural and design choices for highly available, secure, and scalable systems.

• Develop and maintain clean, efficient, thoroughly tested, and easily maintainable code.

• Create and enhance RESTful APIs and backend services.

• Engage in code reviews, technical discussions, and collaborative problem-solving sessions.

• Diagnose, debug, and resolve intricate technical challenges.

• Work across various technology stacks and adapt to new tools and frameworks.

• Keep up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry best practices.

• Ensure operational excellence and optimal customer experience for the products and systems managed by the team.

• Collaborate with an agile engineering team to deliver solutions that impact WEX customers and drive business growth.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

• Over 7 years of software engineering experience in designing, developing, and supporting enterprise-scale applications.

• Extensive experience in building cloud-based applications and infrastructure utilizing infrastructure-as-code methodologies.

• Proficient with event streaming platforms like Kafka.

• Experience with Elasticsearch, including indexing strategies, query optimization, and data analysis.

• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS.

• Strong grasp of software engineering principles, including data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, scalability, availability, and reliability.

• Excellent problem-solving abilities with the capacity to analyze complex technical issues.

• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with a collaborative approach.

• Preferred: Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.

• Preferred: More than 8 years of software engineering experience.

• Experience in developing Agentic/AI solutions.

• Familiarity with designing and implementing event-driven architectures.

• Experience in working with card payments or financial services platforms.

• Practical experience with Docker and Kubernetes.

• Knowledge of API security principles and PCI DSS compliance requirements.

• Experience enhancing existing codebases and improving legacy systems.

• Strong backend development skills in Java or C#, including frameworks like Spring Boot.

• Experience in designing, building, and optimizing RESTful APIs, OData services, and SQL-based solutions.

• Proven track record in developing internet-scale services focusing on scalability, security, availability, and reliability.
