This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Design and implement simulation capabilities for missions and campaigns using modern C++ and Python.
• Build and enhance frameworks for event-driven, discrete-event, agent-based, and constructive simulations.
• Take ownership of core framework features, which include event scheduling, simulation timing, state transitions, platform abstractions, scenario execution, data collection, and deterministic replay.
• Develop models for platforms, sensors, weapons, communication systems, electronic warfare, jamming, command and control, logistics, and environmental impacts.
• Extend AFSIM and similar simulation environments with C++ plugins, framework services, SDK integrations, new platform types, and reusable model interfaces.
• Convert operational concepts, system specifications, and subject-matter expertise into maintainable software models that have clear assumptions and testable behaviors.
• Modernize legacy tools for campaign and mission analysis and incorporate them into a unified simulation architecture.
• Construct workflows for scenario generation, Monte Carlo simulations, sensitivity analysis, campaign execution, and evaluation.
• Scale simulations across developer workstations, on-premises infrastructure, and cloud computing while ensuring reproducibility and model provenance.
• Integrate constructive simulations with distributed environments, hardware-in-the-loop, or human-in-the-loop setups as necessary.
• Establish practices for verification and validation, reference scenarios, regression suites, and quantitative assessments of model credibility.
• Engage directly with government, Air Force, and broader DoD stakeholders to comprehend acquisition needs and swiftly deliver usable capabilities.
• Collaborate with teams in physics, backend, geospatial, AI, and product development to integrate the simulation kernel into a larger interactive platform.
• Lead design and code reviews, mentor team members, and enhance architecture, documentation, testing, and release practices.
• At the staff level, define and uphold testing standards, provide architectural direction, manage design documents for major projects, scope complex initiatives, assess technical risks, review high-impact tasks, lead technical grooming and RFCs, and coordinate across teams.
• A minimum of five years of professional software development experience in building simulation, autonomy, robotics, game engines, digital twins, or similarly intricate systems.
• Extensive production experience in modern C++, along with proficiency in Python for tooling, orchestration, analysis, or automation.
• Hands-on experience in developing or extending a simulation framework.
• Familiarity with event-driven, discrete-event, agent-based, constructive, or distributed simulation architectures.
• Proven ability to represent intricate real-world entities, interactions, rules, and edge cases as clear software abstractions.
• Experience in building plugins, SDKs, reusable model interfaces, framework services, platform types, or similar extension mechanisms.
• Strong grasp of software architecture, data structures, algorithms, APIs, testing, debugging, and performance engineering.
• Experience making significant modifications within a large existing codebase while ensuring ongoing delivery.
• Background in model verification, validation, calibration, or regression testing.
• Capability to transform ambiguous operational or technical requirements into actionable engineering plans.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document model assumptions, limitations, interfaces, and intended use.
• A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in computer science, engineering, applied mathematics, operations research, physics, or a related field.
• An active Secret clearance or eligibility to obtain one.
• Direct experience in developing AFSIM plugins, framework extensions, event infrastructure, or custom platform types is highly preferred.
• Experience with behavior trees, finite state machines, and planning languages such as PDDL is highly preferred.
• Experience in supporting Air Force, Space Force, joint, or broader DoD acquisition and mission-analysis programs is highly preferred.
• Background in developing models for sensors, weapons, electronic warfare, jamming, communications, logistics, or command and control is highly preferred.
• Experience in translating or modernizing a large legacy modeling or campaign analysis system into C++ is highly preferred.
• Experience in designing a simulation framework, event stack, plugin architecture, or campaign system from the ground up is highly preferred.
• Familiarity with HLA, DIS, OneSAF, JSAF, NGTS, STK, or other constructive and distributed simulation environments is highly preferred.
• Experience that encompasses both operational and constructive simulation is highly preferred.
• An active TS/SCI clearance is highly preferred.
• Staff level expectation: 7+ years of experience.
• Comprehensive health care plan with 100% premium coverage, including medical, dental, and vision.
• 401k plan with 5% matching contribution.
• Uncapped Paid Time Off (including vacation, sick days, and public holidays).
• Flexible hybrid or remote work arrangements.
• Relocation assistance available for qualifying employees.
