This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Arizona, +27 more states.
β’ Take charge of designing essential systems, including wallets and ledgers, enrollment lifecycles, reimbursement evaluations, and financial/student record processes.
β’ Identify and address overarching issues that lack distinct ownership.
β’ Establish engineering standards and lead design as well as code review sessions.
β’ Oversee data modeling and system architecture; guide the team towards developing robust data structures.
β’ Define Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs), create monitoring systems, lead incident response efforts, conduct blameless postmortems, and implement necessary fixes.
β’ Develop autonomous systems for checks, reviews, reports, rollouts, data corrections, and documentation.
β’ Safeguard student Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and company funds in collaboration with Security and Legal teams, ensuring compliance with FERPA, state audits, and traceability requirements.
β’ Mentor engineers and enhance their decision-making skills.
β’ Act as a representative of the Engineering team to Product and leadership, translating strategies into actionable roadmaps while challenging inaccurate plans.
β’ Work across the entire stack using a Next.js, TypeScript, and PostgreSQL monolithic architecture.
β’ Collaborate closely with the CTO to shape the long-term engineering strategy.
β’ Over 8 years of software development experience, particularly in small or rapidly growing companies where you have taken ownership of outcomes.
β’ Extensive knowledge of TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node, and PostgreSQL.
β’ Strong skills in PostgreSQL, including schema design, transaction management, locking mechanisms, and query performance optimization.
β’ Proven experience in designing and delivering complex production systems that span across team boundaries, including payments, ledgers, workflows, and integrations.
β’ Capability for first-principles reasoning and the ability to articulate system behavior effectively.
β’ Experience in setting technical direction and mentoring fellow engineers.
β’ Background in handling sensitive data and real financial transactions.
β’ Proficient technical writing and communication skills for engaging with non-technical audiences.
β’ Interest in utilizing AI while maintaining ownership and accountability.
β’ Must reside in one of the specified eligible U.S. states.
β’ Authorized to work in the United States.
β’ Preferred: Experience with event-driven, asynchronous, workflow-centric systems using Kafka, Temporal, or Inngest.
β’ Preferred: Experience with AI in automating developer workflows.
β’ Preferred: Background in K-12 education or industries focused on regulation and compliance.
