Staff Product Designer, Design Systems – Visual

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design and oversee the three-tier token graph—global, semantic, and component-specific—to meet diverse themes, platforms, and density requirements.

• Make and justify architectural decisions regarding token naming conventions, tier boundaries, levels of semantic abstraction, and the balance between flexibility and constraints.

• Manage the migration of tokens through secure, phased rollout processes and governance measures.

• Take ownership of Trellis’s visual language encompassing color, typography, spacing, iconography, and motion.

• Serve as the final authority on visual quality, ensuring the aesthetic quality standard is upheld.

• Develop and articulate design principles and foundational tenets.

• Ensure the Trellis token layer is machine-readable for AI coding tools, MCP integrations, and generative UI systems.

• Collaborate with product teams across HubSpot as the expert on token and visual language.

• Work alongside engineers to ensure implementation accuracy and adherence to design intent.

• Contribute to Trellis governance, conduct contribution reviews, set quality standards, and implement policies to prevent token drift.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven hands-on experience managing a multi-tier token architecture at an enterprise level.

• Demonstrated experience in designing and delivering a token system within a multi-product or multi-platform context.

• A strong track record of making impactful token architecture decisions, including naming conventions, tier structures, semantic abstraction, and managing breaking changes.

• Comprehensive understanding of visual design as a systems discipline, covering color, typography, spacing, iconography, and motion.

• Experience in evolving an established design language.

• A portfolio showcasing the aesthetic outcomes of token and systems work.

• Capability to establish and implement design tenets.

• Familiarity with or demonstrated interest in machine-readable design systems, including the W3C DTCG token format and AI tool ingestion.

• Knowledge of Tokens Studio, Style Dictionary, Figma Variables API, and emerging MCP/AI integrations.

• Ability to work autonomously at a staff level.

• Skill in collaborating with engineering teams on implementation fidelity and technical limitations.

• Proficiency in communicating token architecture decisions to non-specialist stakeholders.

• Experience in maintaining the visual quality standard for systems utilized by a wide range of designers.

• Expert-level design skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

• Strong presentation abilities and a well-informed, compelling perspective.

• Excellent cross-functional relationships and a solid understanding of strategic and business objectives.
