Staff Java Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the architecture for key Internal Platforms services, integrations, and data flows, from defining problems to overseeing production operations.

• Lead intricate cross-functional technical designs, establish trade-offs, and foster alignment among teams.

• Decompose ambiguous departmental challenges into actionable technical plans and workstreams.

• Assess technologies, methodologies, vendors, and engineering design strategies.

• Set standards for API design, testing, observability, deployment, and integrations.

• Recognize technical debt and reliability risks, then prioritize remediation efforts.

• Design, develop, maintain, and review Java backend services utilizing Spring Boot or comparable frameworks.

• Address issues related to high-throughput event processing, multi-system integration, data integrity, and cross-service production challenges.

• Identify root causes and implement sustainable solutions along with necessary instrumentation.

• Contribute to internal web applications and user interfaces supported by Java services.

• Mentor and coach engineers, onboard new team members, and create opportunities for growth.

• Produce documentation, runbooks, and design records.

• Collaborate with Product, Operations, Support, Marketing, Risk, Compliance, Data, and engineering teams.

• Manage delivery scope, estimates, unblocking, and outcomes.

• Oversee architecture for third-party and SaaS integrations, including REST APIs, platform events, middleware, data ownership, consistency, and failure management.

• Ensure production health, SLOs, alerting, on-call quality, incident response, and post-incident follow-up.

• Enhance CI/CD, test automation, release safety, and developer productivity.

⛳️ Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong focus on Java.

• Proven record of owning the architecture and delivery of complex production systems across multiple teams or functions.

• Extensive experience in designing APIs and integrating distributed systems.

• Ability to operate independently on ambiguous problems through to production.

• Experience in mentoring engineers and elevating technical standards.

• Proficient in communicating complex technical concepts and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Familiar with Git-based workflows, code reviews, and CI/CD pipelines.

• Experience managing production services, including on-call responsibilities and incident response.

• Preferred: familiarity with event-driven architectures like Kafka; cloud environments, particularly AWS, including infrastructure-as-code; highly available or regulated systems; internal web UIs/tooling; AI model or agent platforms; AI-powered coding assistants.

• Nice to have: exposure to Salesforce integration and Salesforce certifications.
