Staff Engineer/Tech Lead, Embedded Finance – Card Issuing, AI Adoption

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom, +6 more countries.

📋 Description

• Define and lead the technical roadmap for the embedded finance platform, focusing on scalability, architectural modernization, and the resolution of technical debt.

• Spearhead the adoption of AI-assisted engineering methodologies across Product Engineering teams.

• Create workflows enhanced by AI, conduct LLM-assisted code reviews, and implement agentic automation for routine engineering tasks.

• Collaborate with Card Engineering Managers to ensure platform direction aligns with product delivery and to address technical dependencies.

• Provide practical technical guidance on intricate engineering challenges.

• Identify systemic quality issues within engineering and devise strategies to resolve them.

• Act as a technical mentor for senior engineers by leading design reviews, establishing standards, and offering mentorship.

• Oversee architecture reviews and the modernization of embedded finance systems, covering service boundaries, data models, API contracts, and event flows.

• Pinpoint and eliminate scalability bottlenecks.

• Establish reusable engineering patterns and standards.

• Propel platform initiatives from request for comments (RFC) through to production delivery and ongoing stability.

• Evaluate, prioritize, and address technical debt in conjunction with product delivery.

• Define standards for AI-assisted software development, including tooling, prompt patterns, and software development life cycle (SDLC) workflows.

• Monitor and report on AI adoption signals across Product Engineering teams.

• Set benchmarks for code quality, observability, testability, and reliability across the Card domain.

• Provide mentorship to Staff and Senior engineers while raising the technical standards across teams.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 8 years of experience in software engineering.

• Proven track record of technical leadership at the Staff or Tech Lead level.

• Extensive experience in distributed systems, API platform architecture, or large-scale financial infrastructure.

• Capability to drive complex technical initiatives across multiple teams without having direct authority.

• Strong systems thinking skills, with an understanding of fault tolerance, observability, data consistency, and performance at scale.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to produce RFCs, lead design reviews, and present technical strategies to both engineering and executive audiences.

• Genuine enthusiasm for AI/LLM tools and software engineering processes.

• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar technologies.

• Experience in integrating AI-assisted development tools into engineering workflows.

• Proficiency in TypeScript, Node.js, NestJS, and AWS.

• Nice to have: experience in fintech, card issuing, payments, or API platform infrastructure.

• Nice to have: familiarity with engineering metrics like DORA, AI-augmented output, and platform reliability.

• Nice to have: knowledge of card issuing/embedded finance product models and card network infrastructures such as Visa, Mastercard, or Thredd.

• Nice to have: experience with technical uplift programs, technical debt reduction, test coverage enhancements, or legacy system migrations.

• Nice to have: familiarity with New Relic, Datadog, OpenTelemetry, and CI/CD automation.
