Staff Engineer, Retail

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Germany.

📋 Description

• Provide technical leadership across two engineering teams and interconnected domains.

• Design scalable distributed solutions encompassing both frontend and backend components.

• Facilitate architectural choices and make informed trade-offs concerning performance, security, reliability, maintainability, and cost.

• Shape customer-facing checkout experiences utilizing React and robust backend functionalities with Java.

• Influence solutions from the discovery phase and system design through to implementation and production.

• Assist in establishing foundations for future native iOS and Android checkout experiences.

• Drive practices related to architecture, performance, security, testing, observability, and reliability.

• Develop reusable patterns, guidelines, and platform capabilities to address recurring technical challenges.

• Align Checkout, Payments, Orders, Shipping, and related teams across ownership boundaries.

• Mentor engineers and drive architecture and design discussions.

• Collaborate with Product, UX, and engineering leadership to translate business requirements into technical strategies.

• Leverage data, metrics, and industry trends to assess trade-offs and prioritize impactful investments.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive, hands-on full-stack engineering experience with React and Java.

• Proven production ownership of customer-facing frontend applications and backend services.

• Ability to analyze architecture, performance, security, reliability, and maintainability.

• Experience at the Staff/Principal level or equivalent technical scope.

• Background in designing complex distributed systems and influencing architectural decisions across multiple teams or domains.

• Strong track record of leading through influence and fostering the growth of fellow engineers.

• Capability to mentor seasoned engineers and facilitate architecture and design discussions.

• Proficiency in introducing engineering standards and enabling high-quality technical decisions.

• Strong business acumen and product judgment.

• Ability to collaborate effectively with Product, UX, Security, SRE, and engineering stakeholders.

• Experience in checkout, payments, orders, e-commerce, or marketplace systems is highly advantageous.

• Familiarity with native Android/Kotlin or iOS/Swift development is beneficial.
