This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Germany.
• Provide technical leadership across two engineering teams and their interconnected domains.
• Architect scalable distributed solutions for both frontend and backend systems.
• Facilitate architectural decisions and make informed trade-offs regarding performance, security, reliability, maintainability, and cost.
• Identify risks that extend beyond individual teams.
• Maintain a hands-on approach across frontend and backend technologies, utilizing React and Java.
• Shape customer-facing checkout experiences along with scalable backend capabilities.
• Influence solutions from the discovery phase and system design through to implementation and production.
• Assist in establishing the groundwork for future native iOS and Android checkout experiences.
• Drive best practices in architecture, performance, security, testing, observability, and reliability.
• Develop reusable patterns, guidelines, and platform functionalities.
• Align Checkout, Payments, Orders, Shipping, and relevant teams for cohesive operation.
• Mentor engineers and facilitate discussions on architecture and design.
• Collaborate with Product, UX, and engineering leadership on technical strategies.
• Utilize data, metrics, and industry trends to prioritize impactful investments and technological decisions.
• Extensive, hands-on full-stack engineering expertise with React and Java.
• Proven production ownership of customer-facing frontend applications and backend services.
• Strong ability to analyze architecture, performance, security, reliability, and maintainability.
• Experience at the Staff/Principal level or equivalent technical responsibility.
• Background in designing complex distributed systems.
• Proven ability to drive architectural decisions that impact multiple teams or domains.
• Experience in leading through influence and mentoring other engineers.
• Ability to guide experienced engineers and facilitate discussions on architecture and design.
• Experience in establishing engineering standards.
• Strong business acumen and product judgment.
• Capability to collaborate with Product, UX, Security, SRE, and engineering stakeholders.
• Proficiency in using metrics and evidence for decision-making.
• Familiarity with checkout, payments, orders, e-commerce, or marketplace systems is highly advantageous.
• Exposure to native Android/Kotlin or iOS/Swift development is a valuable asset.
