Staff Engineer – Money, Risk & Payment Ancillaries

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Spain, +7 more countries.

📋 Description

• Act as the senior technical leader for Money, Risk & Payment Anciliaries.

• Take ownership of architecture involving risk, fraud, scams, money operations, reconciliations, and chargebacks.

• Establish technical direction through the use of versioned APIs and event-driven design.

• Design low-latency systems that assess transactions for risk and fraud at or before authorization.

• Develop money operations and reconciliation systems featuring idempotency, exactly-once semantics, and auditable ledgers.

• Create platforms aimed at scam prevention and managing the chargeback and dispute lifecycle.

• Engineer highly available, compliant, bank-grade systems in a zero-tolerance-for-failure setting.

• Promote a You Build It, You Run It culture, which includes multi-tenancy, elastic scaling, automated observability, and ownership of production.

• Mentor engineers and collaborate with Product, Data/ML, Compliance, and Staff Engineers on intricate cross-team initiatives.

• Utilize AI-assisted tools throughout design, implementation, testing, and review phases, while influencing unit adoption.

• Lead the architectural design of at least one core capability within the initial 6 to 12 months.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience in software engineering, with profound knowledge of Go and/or Kotlin and expertise across the full stack.

• Demonstrated history of architecting robust, scalable, and maintainable distributed systems that are event-driven, high-throughput, and low-latency.

• Strong understanding of design patterns and industry best practices.

• Experience in building financial or risk-critical systems where accuracy, consistency, and auditability are essential.

• Significant experience with AWS and cloud-native services, including RDS, ECS, EKS, and S3.

• Excellent automated testing practices, covering unit, integration, and end-to-end testing.

• Experience in Agile, DevSecOps, and CI/CD workflows.

• Proven technical leadership, including mentoring engineers, steering technical vision, and delivering complex cross-team projects.

• Familiarity with DORA metrics.

• Ability to balance reliability and compliance with feature velocity.

• Advanced proficiency in written and spoken English.

• Preferred: experience with fraud/risk scoring models and ML feature pipelines; double-entry ledgers and reconciliation; chargeback and dispute frameworks in accordance with card-network rules; or APP-scam prevention.

• Preferred: knowledge of Kafka, exactly-once processing, or event sourcing.

• Preferred: experience in the payments or fintech industry on a global scale.

• Preferred: expertise in performance optimization and efficient algorithms for high-throughput, low-latency systems.

• Preferred: familiarity with static analysis and code-quality tools like SonarQube and mature CI/CD pipelines.

• Nice to have: experience in introducing engineering practices or standards across multiple teams.

• Nice to have: contributions to open-source projects or technical writing experience.

• Nice to have: proficiency in Spanish.
