Staff Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the architecture and development of Zip’s real-time money movement and payments platform.

• Direct technical strategies across various teams in distributed systems.

• Integrate AI into engineering processes and product functionalities.

• Create systems that ensure safe and reliable money movement among distributed services.

• Establish and refine platform patterns for event-driven architectures and collaborative system design.

• Lead complex, high-stakes initiatives from ideation to production across multiple teams.

• Balance the need for speed with the long-term health of critical financial systems.

• Develop and standardize AI-assisted engineering practices for code generation, testing, debugging, and incident analysis.

• Enhance system reliability, performance, and developer experience throughout the organization.

• Construct systems that guarantee financial accuracy even under failure scenarios, including retries, duplication, and reconciliation.

• Promote AI adoption by mentoring engineers and establishing best practices.

• Provide AI-driven efficiencies to minimize development cycle time, enhance code quality, and speed up incident resolution.

• Collaborate with platform and tooling teams to incorporate AI into CI/CD, observability, IDEs, and internal tools.

• Work alongside engineering and product leaders to influence strategic decisions and mentor senior engineers.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 12 years of experience in building and operating distributed backend systems in contemporary engineering environments.

• Extensive experience in payments, fintech, or other systems requiring high levels of accuracy such as settlement, reconciliation, or transaction processing.

• Demonstrated success in utilizing AI to enhance engineering outcomes and foster team-wide adoption at scale.

• Proven experience leading intricate, cross-team initiatives and steering technical direction across multiple systems.

• Profound knowledge in system design, including event-driven architectures, microservices, and high-availability systems.

• Practical engineering experience with code, services, and infrastructure.

• Strong ability to make technical decisions in uncertain situations.

• Experience in mentoring senior engineers and elevating engineering standards across teams.

• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Azure or AWS.

• Competence in backend technologies like C#/.NET or similar.

• Experience in assessing and selecting AI tools, models, and workflows, with consideration of cost, latency, accuracy, and safety.

• Capability to define metrics and assess the impact of AI adoption.
