Staff Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead significant initiatives within the Safer product domain

• Design and execute intricate, multi-system projects

• Anticipate technical challenges and make informed architectural and implementation choices

• Enhance system reliability, performance, scalability, and long-term viability

• Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to convert broad objectives into actionable technical strategies

• Work with engineers across various ownership areas to develop and sustain scalable systems and applications from start to finish

• Take on large, complex initiatives independently, identify uncertainties, gather input, deconstruct ambiguous issues, and communicate progress

• Facilitate technical discussions across teams and establish requirements alongside Build and Product

• Create user-centered solutions, articulate trade-offs, gather feedback, and iterate accordingly

• Engage in daily coding, code reviews, production troubleshooting, on-call rotations, system reliability, and incident response

• Identify and prioritize technical debt effectively

• Share knowledge, offer feedback, mentor colleagues, and support work beyond the primary domain

• Investigate and integrate new tools, technologies, or methodologies that enhance products and workflows

• A commitment to prioritizing the children served by Thorn in all actions

• Extensive experience in building and operating backend services in production, including proficiency in Python

• Practical experience in deploying or supporting production applications within Kubernetes

• Capability to work with common Kubernetes resources and troubleshoot application-level issues

• Experience in building and managing services in a production cloud setting

• Strong architectural insight and consideration of the broader system impact

• Ability to navigate ambiguous problem spaces and clarify complex technical challenges

• Autonomy and sound judgment in determining when to seek guidance

• Competence in making pragmatic technical trade-offs while balancing immediate needs with long-term maintainability

• Capability to influence technical decisions through clear communication of trade-offs and collaboration

• Ability to mentor engineers, provide constructive feedback, and establish common technical standards

• Empathy and the skill to advocate for users while balancing product vision and engineering constraints

• Clear, efficient, and thoughtful communication, particularly in a widely distributed team

• Experience with Python and Kubernetes is required; familiarity with other listed technologies is not mandatory

• Beneficial experience with high-volume systems or data-processing pipelines

• Beneficial experience in developing software, platforms, APIs, or tools for other developers

• Beneficial experience with AWS, Terraform, PostgreSQL, or Elasticsearch
