Staff Database Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Implement and manage cross-region replication utilizing Amazon DynamoDB Global Tables.

• Codify infrastructure using Terraform or AWS CDK.

• Establish observability for replication health, encompassing lag metrics, consistency checks, alarm thresholds, and automation of runbooks.

• Create and execute failover and failback runbooks.

• Conduct game-day exercises using AWS Fault Injection Service.

• Measure and report on RTO and RPO metrics.

• Implement KMS cross-account replication, IAM service principals for replication roles, and strategies for secrets and parameters related to region-local dependencies.

• Facilitate monolith-to-microservices data extraction by constructing CDC pipelines, validating data integrity, and managing cutover sequences.

• Collaborate with application engineers on connection-string abstraction, retry and idempotency patterns, and graceful degradation during regional failovers.

• Compose design documents and runbooks for handover to client teams.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in production database engineering on AWS.

• Hands-on involvement with payments, banking, brokerage, or similar financial services workloads.

• Extensive production experience with DynamoDB and at least two of the following: Aurora MySQL, Cassandra, ElastiCache (Redis or Valkey), DocumentDB, and Neptune.

• Proficient in at least two additional database technologies listed.

• Experience in configuring and managing DynamoDB Global Tables for multi-region deployments.

• Proven ability to handle replication conflicts, regional outages, replication delays, and issues related to consistency or version skew.

• Strong skills in Terraform or AWS CDK, including the development of multi-region modules from the ground up.

• Familiarity with CDC tools such as DMS, DynamoDB Streams, Kafka Connect, or Debezium.

• Understanding of schema drift, ordering guarantees, and replay mechanisms.

• Knowledge of Linux and networking fundamentals, including VPC, Transit Gateway, peering, and DNS.

• Proficiency in IAM and KMS.

• Excellent written communication skills.

• Ability to operate within a regulated client environment.

• Proficiency in English at the required level stated in the application form.

• Legal authorization to work in the country where the position is based.

• AWS Database Specialty or Solutions Architect Associate/Professional certifications are desirable.
