Staff Data Scientist – Wildfire

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee research aimed at estimating vegetation structure, fuel conditions, and wildfire risk utilizing satellite, LiDAR, and environmental data across various geographical areas.

• Develop methodologies for validation and evaluation, encompassing ground-truth strategies, uncertainty quantification, and analysis of real-world impact errors.

• Create and enhance machine-learning modeling techniques while collaborating with ML engineers to implement them into production systems.

• Combine fire science, fuel models, and fire behavior theories with data-driven approaches.

• Establish scientific benchmarks for experimentation, reproducibility, and model interpretability.

• Present research outcomes to engineers, product teams, customers, and the wildfire science community.

• Guide ML engineers in scientific methodology and domain reasoning.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 8 years of practical research or data science experience in wildfire science, fire ecology, forestry, remote sensing, atmospheric science, or a related quantitative domain.

• Profound knowledge in remote sensing and geospatial analysis.

• Experience with satellite imagery and extensive environmental datasets.

• Strong abilities in statistical modeling and machine learning using Python.

• Proficient with tools such as GeoPandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch, or XGBoost.

• Demonstrated success in designing validation studies and evaluation frameworks for environmental or geospatial models.

• Exceptional communication skills tailored for both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Availability in North America time zones: NST, AST, EST, CST, MST, or PST.

• Candidates must reside and work in one of the eligible countries specified by the company.
