Staff Data Engineer – GRC Enablement, OLTP

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design, assess, and enhance Postgres schemas for GRC product services.

• Establish standards for indexing, constraints, partitioning, and connection pooling.

• Identify and address performance bottlenecks in production.

• Take ownership of migration strategies and tools, including schema alterations, backfills, and zero-downtime deployments.

• Manage change-data-capture processes and data extraction from Postgres into OLAP systems.

• Define stable, well-documented landing-zone data agreements with the OLAP specialist.

• Collaborate on dbt/ETL logic for transaction and history-mart models.

• Set relational modeling patterns and SQL review standards.

• Optimize SQL for transactional workloads, focusing on query plans, indexing, lock contention, and multi-join performance.

• Define data agreements between services and downstream OLAP consumers.

• Implement data integrity checks, replication/failover practices, and monitoring mechanisms.

• Oversee schema and pipeline promotions through development, testing, and production using GitOps/CI/CD and gated approvals.

• Apply RBAC, audit logging, and encryption standards at both the OLTP and extraction layers.

• Establish schema design patterns, SQL coding standards, and documentation practices.

• Mentor engineers on relational modeling, query optimization, and transactional systems.

• Lead incident resolution and root-cause analysis for production data challenges and extraction failures.

• Collaborate with the OLAP specialist to define responsibility boundaries.

• Work alongside the platform data team on infrastructure decisions while maintaining responsibility for GRC-specific data outcomes.

⛳️ Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in data engineering or backend engineering with direct ownership of production Postgres or similar relational OLTP systems.

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

• Expert-level SQL skills with a strong understanding of query planning, indexing strategies, and transactional isolation levels.

• Demonstrated experience in owning schema design and migrations for large-scale production Postgres services.

• Experience in building CDC/extraction pipelines, such as Debezium or Kafka Connect, that feed into a cloud warehouse.

• Familiarity with regulated or highly controlled environments that require strict release governance and compliance adherence.

• Knowledge of connection pooling, replication, and backup/recovery strategies.

• Proficient working knowledge of dbt sufficient for collaboration on shared models.

• Proven track record of mentoring engineers and establishing cross-team technical standards.

• Reliable internet access for any remote work not conducted in a Workiva office.

• Willingness to travel up to 10%.
