Staff Backend Engineer – Phone Billing

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the complete technical integrity of Phone Billing, addressing architectural challenges, reliability risks, technical debt, billing precision, reconciliation, scalability, observability, and cost efficiency.

• Spearhead 1–2 significant initiatives, guiding them from problem identification and technical exploration through architecture, implementation, deployment, and evaluation.

• Manage high-level architectural and scaling decisions for CPaaS abstractions, provider adapters, and shared messaging/voice APIs that support billions of monthly events.

• Oversee Phone Billing usage metering, rating, reserve/commit lifecycles, idempotency, reconciliation, and audit trails.

• Lead the transformation of Revenue Growth into a configuration-driven, rules-based platform.

• Engage directly with NestJS, Firestore, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Redis, queuing systems, data warehousing systems, and service mesh-based microservices.

• Drive cross-functional initiatives that enhance reliability, latency, and throughput across high-concurrency APIs and workflows.

• Improve monitoring, alerting using Prometheus/Grafana, and incident response strategies, focusing on financial invariants.

• Utilize LLMs and AI tools for writing, refactoring, testing, and debugging code while establishing reliability guardrails.

• Collaborate with product, infrastructure, security, finance, and legal teams to ensure data integrity, access control, and compliance in phone services.

• Mentor engineering managers and senior engineers, cultivate the leadership pipeline, strategize succession planning, and elevate hiring standards.

• Engage in design reviews, in-depth analyses, and on-call rotations.

⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 8 years in backend engineering, including at least 2 years in a Staff role.

• Demonstrated success in designing fault-tolerant systems that operate at the scale of billions of hits or events.

• Profound knowledge in distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and asynchronous job processing.

• Background in building systems critical to correctness, such as metering, ledgers, billing, payments, or similar transactional fields.

• Solid understanding of idempotency, exactly-once semantics, and reconciliation processes.

• Proven experience in optimizing availability, performance, and reliability in production systems under heavy load.

• Strong expertise in both relational and NoSQL data models, particularly with complex transactional data.

• Experience in designing policy- or rules-driven systems.

• Familiarity with monitoring, SLOs, and root-cause analysis within production settings.

• Knowledge of hallucination mitigation strategies, such as code constraints, test scaffolding, embeddings, and context injection.

• Exceptional communication and cross-functional collaboration abilities, especially with Finance, Legal, and external partners.

• Practical, hands-on leadership that balances a long-term vision with iterative execution.

• Experience with usage-based billing or metering engines in high-volume products.

• Exposure to telecom trust and compliance frameworks, including 10DLC, toll-free verification, TCPA/TSR, DLT, carrier filtering, or number portability.

• Experience in constructing provider-agnostic integration layers across various third-party vendors.

• Familiarity with AI tools and communication APIs such as Twilio and Plivo.

• Contributions to open-source projects, internal platforms, or engineering blogs.
