Staff Backend Engineer – Core DevOps

📋 Description

• Oversee the technical design and implementation of backend projects that involve multiple teams.

• Identify and eliminate systemic obstacles across product and infrastructure divisions.

• Spearhead the development of modular backend, service, data, and platform architecture.

• Upgrade the monolithic and legacy backends while avoiding fragmentation and service sprawl.

• Establish and enhance standards for APIs, contracts, compatibility, schema evolution, testing, security, performance, observability, operability, and maintainability.

• Create frameworks for dependency management, data ownership, event handling, failure isolation, service maturity, and operational documentation.

• Define Go service patterns and Kubernetes operational practices.

• Facilitate the adoption of Rust where it meets systems, security, performance, or supply-chain requirements.

• Engage in on-call duties and incident response, acting as a technical escalation resource during complex incidents.

• Collaborate with Product and Engineering leadership on platform roadmap strategies and investment trade-offs.

• Mentor Senior and Intermediate engineers, minimize technical debt, develop reusable patterns, and promote the adoption of AI-assisted and agentic workflows with a focus on quality, security, privacy, and operational guidelines.

• Work alongside Product, Frontend, Infrastructure, Security, Data, Engineering Managers, and engineers across various product teams.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven track record of leading technical initiatives across multiple teams or extensive product areas.

• Extensive backend architecture and production experience with intricate applications, services, or platforms, including application programming interfaces, service platforms, data systems, modular monoliths, or shared backend components.

• Experience in modernizing a monolithic or legacy backend architecture in production using modular strategies such as bounded contexts, package encapsulation, ports and adapters, service extraction, or event-driven boundaries.

• Ability to foster alignment through well-documented proposals and decision records so teams can understand and adopt technical choices.

• Experience in making trade-offs among customer satisfaction, delivery speed, technical integrity, reliability, and long-term platform investments.

• Proven experience in mentoring engineers and refining standards through code reviews, documentation, and best practices.

• Production experience with AI-assisted or agentic engineering workflows, including enhancing team adoption.

• Familiarity with establishing Go service patterns and Kubernetes operational practices.

• Experience in guiding the adoption of Rust for systems, security, performance, or supply-chain applications.

• Capability to work independently in a fully remote, asynchronous setting and communicate decisions clearly in writing.
