Staff Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Spain.

📋 Description

• Take responsibility for high-stakes backend challenges that span across services, teams, or product domains.

• Define system boundaries and set architectural direction without imposing unnecessary central control.

• Drive technical decisions by clearly presenting constraints, alternatives, risks, and trade-offs.

• Enhance performance, resilience, data integrity, operability, and failure management across production systems.

• Address recurring structural issues instead of merely alleviating symptoms on a team-by-team basis.

• Stay actively involved in implementation, diagnosis, or prototyping when it aids in achieving clarity.

• Guide senior engineers and improve the quality of reviews across teams.

• Collaborate with engineering and product leaders regarding sequencing, risk, and long-term technical investments.

• Engage in discussions with recruiters, participate in code reviews, system design, and managerial interviews.

• Proven technical impact across various teams or within a significant product domain.

• Strong ownership of distributed backend systems functioning at a substantial scale.

• Sound judgment regarding service boundaries, asynchronous communication, data ownership, consistency, and failure modes.

• In-depth knowledge of relational databases, transactions, concurrency, and high-performance design principles.

• Demonstrated history of enhancing reliability, scalability, observability, or developer efficiency through sustainable mechanisms.

• Capability to influence technical direction through evidence, clarity, and reliable execution rather than relying solely on title.

• Clear communication skills that facilitate teams in making decisions on complex technical matters.

• Strong engineering fundamentals and judgment to determine when to standardize, simplify, or leave a system as is.

• Staff scope is evaluated based on ownership, judgment, and lasting organizational impact—not merely years of experience or familiarity with every listed technology.
