Staff Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Romania.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of significant backend challenges that span across services, teams, or product areas.

• Define system boundaries and guide architectural decisions without imposing unnecessary central oversight.

• Steer technical choices by clearly outlining constraints, alternatives, risks, and trade-offs.

• Enhance performance, resilience, data integrity, operability, and failure management within production systems.

• Address recurring structural issues rather than merely alleviating symptoms on a team-by-team basis.

• Stay actively involved in implementation, troubleshooting, or prototyping when it contributes to clarity.

• Mentor senior engineers and improve the quality of reviews across various teams.

• Collaborate with engineering and product leaders on project sequencing, risk assessment, and long-term technical investments.

• Engage in recruiter discussions, code evaluations, system design, and managerial interview processes.

• Proven record of making a technical impact across various teams or a significant product domain.

• Extensive ownership experience with distributed backend systems functioning at a meaningful scale.

• Strong judgment regarding service boundaries, asynchronous communication, data ownership, consistency, and failure modes.

• In-depth understanding of relational databases, transactions, concurrency, and high-performance design principles.

• History of enhancing reliability, scalability, observability, or developer productivity through robust mechanisms.

• Capacity to influence technical direction through evidence, clarity, and reliable execution rather than authority.

• Excellent communication skills that enable teams to navigate complex technical decisions effectively.

• Solid engineering principles and sound judgment to determine when to standardize, simplify, or leave a system untouched.
