This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Michigan.
• Lead and expand cross-functional engineering teams that develop and maintain distributed, API-driven, cloud-native platforms.
• Foster engineering excellence, achieving delivery outcomes and ensuring the technical integrity of assigned products.
• Mentor and guide team members on Agile methodologies and product-focused principles.
• Engage in work planning to align priorities, teams, and incremental achievements.
• Direct cross-functional teams in creating products that provide value to customers and the business.
• Design solutions that encompass multiple team applications as well as those managed by other teams.
• Assist delivery teams in consistently adhering to process and technology standards.
• Create and monitor delivery metrics, track product technical health, and report on progress towards delivery objectives.
• Build cohesive teams, establish clear expectations, assess performance, and provide coaching and mentorship to team members.
• Maintain knowledge of the system ecosystem, architecture, technologies, and domains to ensure operational success.
• Participate in on-call escalation and incident management.
• Take ownership of the design, delivery, and lifecycle governance of API platforms and services, including contract-first design, versioning, deprecation, reuse, and user experience.
• Propel AI adoption throughout the software development lifecycle by setting standards, guidelines, and effectiveness measures.
• Guide the identification, design, and delivery of AI-enabled and agentic capabilities, employing evaluation, human-in-the-loop controls, observability, and responsible-use practices.
• Ensure compliance with policies, processes, and legal guidelines.
• Perform other assigned duties.
• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
• At least 5 years of experience leading engineering teams.
• Demonstrated experience in technical leadership, mentorship, execution of cross-functional projects, and establishing and implementing technical vision and strategy.
• Extensive background in Agile and DevOps practices, including test-driven development, incremental releases, continuous integration, and deployment pipeline automation.
• Proficient in microservices design strategies and implementation, including migration planning, service granularity, interservice communication, traceability, orchestration, and failure isolation.
• Experience with cloud migrations and hybrid on-premise/cloud environments, including container orchestration, security, and serverless technologies.
• Proven track record of leading teams that design and operate reliable distributed services at scale, focusing on performance, observability, failure recovery, and utilizing AI to enhance system capabilities or operations.
• Experience in creating reusable, developer-friendly platforms featuring self-service onboarding, API observability, and applied AI functionalities such as intelligent APIs, tool/function calling, and MCP-based integrations.
• Expertise in building secure, scalable, and cost-effective cloud platforms, including deployment automation and applied AI workloads such as RAG, model services, agents, and AI-enabled engineering workflows.
• Required degrees must be from accredited higher-education institutions recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent.
• Preferred: 4 years’ experience leading initiatives within a Java ecosystem.
• Preferred experience with transactional and race-condition-resilient approaches, database locking, distributed transactions (XA), and SAGA pattern.
• Preferred experience in designing decoupled system transaction models resilient to upstream and downstream outages.
• Preferred experience in implementing and operationalizing rules engines.
• Preferred experience in modernizing or decomposing legacy monoliths into API-first, cloud-native services.
• Preferred experience in integrating AI capabilities within an engineering organization.
• Familiarity with AI platform and tooling ecosystems, including model providers and gateways, agent frameworks, vector databases, and LLM evaluation and observability tools.
• Strong technical expertise with the ability to influence and collaborate with business stakeholders.
• Capability to convey complex technical information both verbally and in writing to all levels of the organization, including senior leadership.
• Proficiency in solving problems at the source with straightforward, effective solutions.
• Ability to foresee cross-system impacts of changes and projects.
• Aptitude to respond promptly and effectively to incidents, tasks, and projects.
• Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm to educate others.
• Skill in building trust and relationships throughout the organization.
• Capacity to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
• Ability to pragmatically evaluate emerging AI tools and make informed decisions on build-vs-buy and adopt-vs-wait scenarios.
