Software Engineer – Observability

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Poland.

📋 Description

• Rethink and redesign Whatnot's observability systems.

• Guarantee visibility into the state, performance, reliability, and user experience of the software stack at 10x and 100x current scale.

• Collect, normalize, route, process, query, and visualize observability data.

• Utilize analytics engines and vendors to aid in predicting incidents and facilitate quick resolution.

• Develop a platform that identifies leading indicators before issues escalate into problems.

• Manage high-volume, low-signal data as well as low-volume, high-signal data.

• Employ open standards such as OpenTelemetry and Semconv.

• Interface with infrastructure to deliver improved management signals beyond just CPU utilization.

• Correlate infrastructure, CI/CD, experimentation, and load-test events with logs and time-series data.

• Provide observability experiences for application engineers, incident responders, and leadership.

• Collaborate closely with the Core Infrastructure, Platform, and Developer Tools teams.

• Build foundational systems and frameworks that assist Whatnot in scaling while ensuring stability and trustworthiness.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of experience in designing and building large-scale distributed systems.

• Preferred experience in Python, Elixir, or Go; however, strong engineers from other backend technologies who are eager to learn are encouraged to apply.

• Identify primarily as a software engineer with a desire to build systems and write code.

• Strong grasp of observability principles, including metrics, logs, events, and traces.

• Solid fundamentals in designing, building, and operating shared production services and frameworks.

• Familiarity with OpenTelemetry.

• Experience with OLAP databases.

• Background in creating developer-facing tools, libraries, or frameworks.

• Experience with high-traffic, real-time, or event-driven systems.

• Comfortable working in cloud-native environments such as AWS or GCP, with Kubernetes and infrastructure as code.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Legally authorized to work in Poland.
