Software Engineer IV, Datastore

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Massachusetts.

📋 Description

• Spearhead the design and architecture for intricate projects and systems within the Datastore.

• Evaluate implementation trade-offs utilizing engineering principles and data analytics.

• Collaborate with product managers, scientific and clinical stakeholders, as well as development and support teams.

• Convert requirements into integrations, services, and scalable data-platform solutions.

• Contribute to overarching product and technical decisions.

• Troubleshoot and analyze ambiguous issues across system boundaries, enhancing structure, test coverage, and tooling.

• Develop features with a strong emphasis on data integrity, design quality, and maintainability.

• Prepare RFCs and lead complex feature discovery and technical design phases.

• Organize individual and team tasks while balancing speed, generalizability, and technical debt.

• Educate and mentor engineers, providing constructive feedback.

• Potentially serve as the project technical lead or act as a point of coordination for engineering practices.

• Enhance the operational robustness and user-friendliness of the Datastore through documentation, tools, and dashboards.

• Manage pipelines responsible for delivering dataset snapshots into the data warehouse.

• Work collaboratively across platform, application, and scientific teams to develop APIs for clinical studies and digital health products.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of backend development experience, with a minimum of 3 years focused on data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications.

• Highly skilled in at least one of the following: data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering.

• Strong expertise in SQL and practical experience with PostgreSQL as an application database.

• Practical knowledge of data streaming and event processing using Kafka or equivalent technologies such as RabbitMQ, Pulsar, Amazon Kinesis, or other cloud-based alternatives.

• Proficient in Julia or Python; experience with Julia is a significant advantage but not mandatory.

• Familiarity with GraphQL and TypeScript/JavaScript (Node.js).

• Experience in deploying and managing services in containerized environments.

• Understanding of Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform and/or Helm.

• Proven history of mentoring engineers and enhancing team practices, tooling, test coverage, or documentation.

• A collaborative mindset with the ability to work across various disciplines.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in asynchronous and remote-friendly settings.

• Self-motivated approach and a track record of success in hybrid or fully remote teams.

• Experience with, or interest in, utilizing LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools in production, demonstrating sound judgment regarding guardrails.
