Small Research Vessel Captain

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Assist with all facets of waterfront operations at Palmer Station, Antarctica.

• Provide guidance to Station Management regarding all marine operations as one of three professional mariners on-site.

• Manage and maintain a fleet of around fifteen active small boats, reserve vessels, and two 30' research vessels.

• Operate vehicles and equipment necessary for launching and recovering small boats using trailers.

• Supervise the upkeep of inboard diesel systems, hydraulics, outboard motors, inflatable boats, and rigid hull inflatables.

• Deliver training and supervision to station staff in areas such as marine safety, seamanship, navigation, radio protocol, boat handling, float plans, rough-weather and sea-ice operations, vessel safety, cold-water survival, oceanographic systems, trailering, and remote operations.

• Keep daily operational records, including vessel logs, situation reports, fuel consumption, equipment maintenance, launch/recovery records, and turnover reports.

• Prepare and uphold boating-operation documentation for Palmer Station, which includes JHAs and Standard Operating Procedures.

• Manage stock and documentation of a comprehensive inventory of spare parts.

• Conduct inspections of safety, lifesaving, firefighting, and emergency equipment.

• Oversee the maintenance of moorings.

• Ensure the safety and cleanliness of workshop areas.

⛳️ Requirements

• An active NSF Public Trust Security Clearance is mandatory for consideration.

• US Citizenship is a requirement.

• Must acquire a Public Trust security clearance before the start date.

• Completion of the physical and dental examinations mandated by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica is required.

• USCG Captain’s OUVP license or equivalent experience when 30’ RHIBs are not in operation.

• A minimum of three years of experience as a Captain, or equivalent vessel-maintenance experience in seasons without RHIB operations.

• At least two years of experience operating motorized small vessels.

• A minimum of two years of experience maintaining small vessel systems and hulls, or equivalent experience.

• Background in commercial marine operations such as merchant marine, fisheries, or boatyards is preferred.

• In-depth knowledge of small vessel operation, trailering, troubleshooting, and maintenance is essential.

• Proven skills in repairing and troubleshooting engines and/or machinery, including 4-stroke outboards, diesel engines, and inflatables.

• Strong independent problem-solving and multi-tasking abilities are necessary.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with strong customer service capabilities, are required.
