
Senior Transportation Planner – Travel Demand Modeler

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.
• Design, calibrate, validate, and implement trip-based and/or activity-based travel demand models.
• Execute, enhance, and uphold travel-demand models.
• Employ and improve mode choice models and advanced discrete choice frameworks.
• Create and implement dynamic traffic assignment and multimodal modeling strategies.
• Develop model components, tools, or extensions using C++ or other high-performance programming languages.
• Identify and resolve model and code issues to guarantee robust, efficient, and reproducible results.
• Integrate modeling platforms, scripting environments, and essential software components.
• Lead technical discussions with clients while being actively engaged in analytical tasks.
• Guide junior staff through code reviews, modeling advice, and collaborative problem-solving.
• Contribute to automation, performance enhancement, and workflow improvements.
• Assist in proposal development and technical writing.
• Support transportation planning and modeling projects across the Mid-Atlantic region and nationwide.
• Collaborate with a team of approximately 10 modelers.
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Transportation Planning, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 8 years of relevant, hands-on experience in travel demand modeling or equivalent experience and/or education.
• Proven experience in developing, calibrating, and applying models.
• Proficiency in one or more platforms such as Cube, TransCAD, VISUM, TRANSIMS, DTALite, DynusT, or similar.
• Capability to create custom data analysis routines in Python, R, C++, or similar languages.
• Proficient in C++ or demonstrated interest and aptitude in developing modeling-related software components.
• Experience working with large datasets and model workflows/pipelines.
• Advanced skills and experience with Excel and data analysis.
• Familiarity with GIS platforms like ArcGIS Pro or QGIS.
• Preferred experience with COG/TPB Gen2 Travel Model.
• Experience or familiarity with Activity-Based Models or COG/TPB Gen3 Travel Model.
• Background in implementing or supporting travel models for MPOs or DOTs.
• Knowledge of federal processes, including NEPA and FHWA/FTA guidelines.
• Experience with tolling and managed lane modeling.
• Familiarity with big data processing tools like RITIS, StreetLight, Replica, or TomTom.
• Experience in cloud environments such as AWS or Azure for model execution.
• Familiarity with Power BI or Tableau.
• Professional certification such as PE, PTP, or AICP is preferred.
• Interest and ability in software development beyond scripting, particularly in writing or modifying core modeling code in C++ and enhancing model performance, memory efficiency, or scalability.
• Must be eligible to work in the United States; sponsorship may be available for current visa holders in the U.S.
