Senior Transmission Planning Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Act as the technical lead or project manager for transmission planning projects, managing scope, schedule, quality, and client relationships.

• Execute steady-state load flow and contingency analyses utilizing PSS/E, PSLF, or PowerWorld.

• Carry out transient stability and dynamic simulation studies, encompassing both conventional generation and inverter-based resources.

• Direct impact studies for generation and large load interconnections across CAISO, MISO, PJM, ERCOT, WECC, and other regional grids.

• Formulate and evaluate long-term transmission expansion strategies.

• Assist with FERC Order 1920 proactive transmission planning and compliance work related to Order 2023 interconnection reforms.

• Conduct studies and assessments in accordance with NERC reliability standards, including TPL-001, FAC-001/002, TOP-001, and the MOD series standards.

• Write and perform quality assurance on technical study reports for regulatory submissions, client deliverables, and interconnection applications.

• Create Python-based automation tools for study execution, model management, and output quality assurance.

• Guide and mentor junior and mid-level engineers.

• Engage in business development through proposal writing, scope formulation, client presentations, and identifying new opportunities.

• Stay updated on evolving FERC policies, regional planning standards, and trends in grid technology.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in transmission planning, power system studies, or a related field of electrical engineering.

• Preferred experience of 8 years or more.

• Practical experience with PSS/E, PSLF, or similar transmission planning software.

• Proven experience in leading or managing technical study projects as the primary point of contact.

• EIT or PE registration, or currently pursuing licensure.

• In-depth knowledge of regional ISOs/RTOs, including CAISO, MISO, PJM, ERCOT, WECC, SERC, NYISO, NEISO, and/or SPP.

• Experience with IBR and BESS dynamic modeling in accordance with NERC MOD-026/027/031/032/033.

• Familiarity with methodologies for long-range transmission expansion planning and scenario-based frameworks.

• Background in large load interconnection studies for data centers, hyperscalers, industrial clients, or other high-demand customers.

• Proficient in Python for automating power system studies, managing models, and handling data workflows.

• Experience in short circuit analysis using ASPEN, CAPE, or ETAP.

• Knowledge of electromagnetic transient software like PSCAD or EMTP.

• Strong technical writing skills with the ability to convey complex findings in a clear manner to non-engineering audiences and utility executives.

• Experience in contributing to business development proposals and engaging in client scoping discussions.
