Senior System Administrator

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Tennessee.

📋 Description

• Manage and maintain Linux operating systems, which includes applying security patches, updating kernels, enhancing the OS, managing package repositories, ensuring compatibility, and monitoring performance.

• Implement and uphold security best practices, such as SSH hardening, creating Ansible playbooks, configuring firewall rules, establishing security policies, securing configurations, conducting vulnerability scans, and ensuring compliance with configurations.

• Provision, set up, and sustain Linux servers that support Academic LAMP services and various applications.

• Deploy, configure, and maintain Linux virtual machines across Hyper-V, Azure, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), and other supported virtualization platforms.

• Ensure high availability, clustering, reliability, and effective failover strategies for the services provided.

• Create, manage, and audit user accounts, roles, permissions, and access for both applications and Linux systems.

• Support the infrastructure of the Student Information System through server installation, patching, upgrades, performance optimization, and decommissioning.

• Enhance infrastructure automation and AI-driven security improvements, including Ansible-based provisioning, patch management, configuration-drift prevention, secure baseline enforcement, and automated vulnerability remediation.

• Standardize deployment workflows for core application stacks to enhance consistency, efficiency, security, and lifecycle management.

• Lead and participate in large-scale projects, implementations, and upgrades; mentor and train junior staff; and provide project leadership and guidance.

⛳️ Requirements

• An associate’s degree in computer science or a related field is required, or 14 years of direct Linux administration experience in the absence of a degree.

• A minimum of 10 years of direct Linux administration experience is required if holding an associate’s degree.

• Strong expertise in Linux systems administration, including proficiency in scripting and Ansible.

• Familiarity with backup and recovery procedures.

• Working knowledge of networking, identity-management tools, load balancing, DNS, and DHCP.

• General knowledge of computer hardware.

• Ability to assist customers with a wide range of system and application issues.

• Capability to work effectively with others while independently managing priorities, deadlines, and complex technical tasks.

• Experience in project management and mentoring junior staff.

• Must be legally authorized to work full-time in the United States without any current or future sponsorship.

• A bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field is preferred.

• Preferred experience in supporting enterprise academic or student information systems and highly available Linux application environments.

• Knowledge of Azure and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is preferred.

• Familiarity with Ellucian Banner applications and their supporting infrastructure is preferred.

• Experience with AI-assisted operations or security engineering capabilities, such as Ansible Lightspeed or AI Ops tools, is preferred.
