Senior Substation Physical Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.

📋 Description

• Lead and manage the design and creation of physical design drawings for distribution substations ranging from 12kV to 69kV, and potentially for transmission substations exceeding 69kV.

• Create substation one-line and three-line diagrams.

• Develop general arrangements and sectional views for substations.

• Prepare electrical details, grounding plans, and conduit plans along with their associated specifications.

• Design layouts for control cubicles, including sections, cable trays, lighting, and grounding systems.

• Generate plans and details for low-voltage AC panels, lightning protection, and illumination systems.

• Conduct engineering studies that encompass AC load analysis, illumination assessments, grounding evaluations, and lightning protection strategies.

• Create bills of materials according to design specifications.

• Collaborate with protection and controls, civil/structural, and drafting teams.

• Assist with client meetings, technical discussions, and project planning processes.

• Engage in site visits and constructability assessments.

• Analyze and integrate vendor information into design deliverables.

• Adhere to client standards.

• Execute and verify that QA/QC protocols are followed for design documents.

• Ensure adherence to IEEE, NESC, NEC, and utility standards.

• Pursue continuous improvement in engineering, technical capabilities, and professional development.

• Mentor and support junior engineers and designers.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering, preferably in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power.

• Over 8 years of experience in substation physical design within the electric utility sector.

• More than 8 years of experience using Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and MicroStation.

• Advanced capabilities in Microsoft Word and Excel.

• Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license or the ability to acquire one within 6 months.

• Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, or comparable design software.

• Knowledge of substation design standards and practices (IEEE, NESC, utility specifications).

• Capacity to manage multiple projects and provide mentorship to junior staff.

• Experience leading substation projects modeled in 3D using Autodesk Inventor.

• Familiarity with substation grounding studies and CDEGS.

• Knowledge of Agi32 illumination software.

• Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.

• Demonstrated initiative and leadership qualities.

• Capability to work effectively from home with minimal supervision.
