Senior Substation Physical Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.

📋 Description

• Lead and manage the creation and development of substation physical design drawings.

• Create one-line and three-line diagrams for substations.

• Prepare general arrangements and sections for stations.

• Develop electrical details, grounding plans and specifications, as well as conduit plans and details.

• Design layouts for control cubicles, including sections, cable trays, lighting, and grounding.

• Design low-voltage AC panels.

• Create plans and details for lightning protection and illumination.

• Direct the design and development of AC load, illumination, grounding, and lightning shielding studies.

• Generate bills of materials according to design specifications.

• Collaborate with protection and controls, civil/structural, and drafting teams.

• Assist in client meetings, technical discussions, and project planning.

• Engage in site visits and constructability assessments.

• Interpret and integrate vendor information into design outputs.

• Adhere to client standards.

• Conduct and ensure QA/QC processes are implemented on design packages.

• Guarantee compliance with IEEE, NESC, NEC, and utility standards.

• Continuously enhance engineering, technical, and professional knowledge and performance.

• Mentor and support junior engineers and designers.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, ideally in electrical with a Power Focus.

• Over 8 years of experience in substation physical design for electric utilities.

• More than 8 years of experience using Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and MicroStation.

• Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities.

• Strong initiative and leadership skills.

• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

• Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license or capability to obtain one within 6 months.

• Proficient in AutoCAD, MicroStation, or comparable design software.

• Knowledge of substation design standards and practices, including IEEE, NESC, and utility specifications.

• Ability to manage multiple projects and guide junior staff.

• Experience in leading substation projects modeled in 3D using Autodesk Inventor.

• Familiarity with substation grounding studies and CDEGS.

• Knowledge of Agi32 illumination software.
