Senior Software Engineer, Search & AI

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Bulgaria, +4 more countries.

📋 Description

• Take charge of and implement customer-facing search features and workflows across both frontend and backend systems, from technical planning to production.

• Create end-to-end AI-powered product experiences.

• Develop responsive user interfaces using Vue while also contributing to Python and Django services.

• Design and enhance search, indexing, and retrieval systems that handle large data volumes.

• Construct and sustain features and data workflows employing Elasticsearch, Kafka, Celery, and MySQL.

• Make informed technical decisions that balance customer experience, delivery speed, performance, reliability, and maintainability.

• Collaborate with Product, Design, and engineering teams to develop solutions and deliver exceptional customer experiences.

• Diagnose and resolve complex production issues while enhancing performance, reliability, observability, and maintainability.

• Engage in on-call and incident response rotations.

• Travel up to 10% for team collaborations, customer engagements, and company events.

• Participate in the annual company offsite, traditionally held in Mexico.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of professional software engineering experience in building and maintaining production software.

• Extensive experience across both frontend and backend systems, delivering features independently throughout the application stack.

• Proficient in Python or a similar programming language.

• Familiarity with Django or an equivalent web framework.

• Proven experience in developing polished, maintainable user-facing applications using Vue.js or another modern JavaScript framework.

• Knowledge of Elasticsearch or similar search technologies, or considerable experience with data-intensive systems.

• Experience in making technical trade-offs within complex production environments.

• Proficient in diagnosing production issues and enhancing system reliability and operational health.

• Experience with TypeScript in a substantial codebase.

• Familiarity with design systems or shared component libraries.

• Willingness to adjust working hours to overlap with teammates in U.S. time zones.

• Experience with Kafka or other streaming/event-driven technologies.

• Knowledge of MySQL, Postgres, or other relational databases.

• Familiarity with Celery or other asynchronous task-processing systems.

• Experience in developing search, discovery, indexing, or information-retrieval functionalities.

• Background in enhancing frontend architecture, performance, or intricate customer-facing workflows.

• Experience with high-traffic SaaS applications or systems managing large data volumes.

• Proven experience in creating customer-facing features supported by LLMs or other AI models.

• Experience in assessing AI-backed features through evaluation, testing, or user feedback.

• Interest in journalism, news, media, or social media.

• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Ability to work autonomously, take ownership, and demonstrate sound judgment.

• Commitment to producing readable, testable, and maintainable software.

• Contribution to engineering culture through code reviews, knowledge sharing, constructive feedback, and continuous improvement.
