Senior Software Engineer, Query Optimization

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +3 more locations.

📋 Description

• Drive innovation in flexible schema databases and develop an exceptional query optimization system

• Investigate cutting-edge query systems to guide design decisions

• Offer technical vision and direction based on product strengths, weaknesses, and industry developments

• Establish initiative-level strategies, architect plans, and guide the team toward successful implementation

• Consult and collaborate with management on roadmap decisions, processes, and architectural frameworks

• Identify, design, implement, test, and support features related to query performance, robustness, query language enhancements, diagnostics, and integrations

• Coordinate smooth transitions with engineers across a feature-rich, extensive codebase

• Work alongside client drivers, cloud services, enterprise tools, support, consulting, education, and marketing teams

• Mentor, coach, and lead team members through exemplary leadership

• Contribute to major-version projects and resolve bugs in stable releases

• Engage in code reviews and draft as well as review designs for new features

• Present papers on query systems or system architectures

• Contribute to the long-term technical roadmap of the MongoDB Query team

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience in data management systems, distributed systems, or large-scale backend engineering

• Proven experience in developing production-level code for a large user base, with a robust design structure and stringent code quality

• Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

• Strong skills in data structures, algorithms, and software design/architecture

• Experience with extensive codebases written in C++ or another systems programming language

• Capability to trace defects, estimate work complexity, and design evolution and integration strategies

• Solid understanding of core database internals

• Direct experience in query optimization is advantageous, but not mandatory

• Background in compilers, language transpilers, or distributed storage systems is a plus
