This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Establish technical elements for the ingestion, processing, storage, and distribution of video and audio content at Reddit.
• Assist in developing the next iteration of Reddit’s media infrastructure.
• Collaborate with product, design, and engineering teams to implement product and business strategies.
• Create innovative products and features.
• Participate in the complete development lifecycle, including technical design, development, testing, experimentation, analysis, and launch.
• Review code and design documentation, providing constructive feedback on product specifications and mockups.
• Contribute to engineering standards and enhance developer workflows.
• Advocate for best practices and guide junior engineers.
• Balance the pace of development with product quality.
• Work with client and platform engineers to enhance media performance across Reddit, ensuring better content delivery globally.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Over 3 years of industry experience in large-scale distributed systems.
• More than 5 years of practical software development experience in one or more general-purpose programming languages (Go, Python, Ruby, Java, C++).
• Proficient in GraphQL, REST, HTTP, gRPC, Thrift basics, with the ability to design and implement maintainable APIs.
• Experienced with distributed caching layers and large-scale data storage systems such as Redis.
• Knowledgeable in image processing and delivery technologies, including image scaling, cropping, and formats such as progressive JPEG and WebP.
• Familiar with HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), MPEG-DASH, MP4, and other streaming protocols, along with video compression standards (H.264, H.265/HEVC, VP9, AV1).
• Strong organizational abilities, with a capacity to prioritize tasks and meet project deadlines.
• Excellent communication skills; able to effectively collaborate with remote teams and discuss complex subjects with both technical and non-technical audiences.
• A curious mindset with a dedication to keeping informed about advancements in video compression technologies.
• Solid understanding of video visual quality metrics, including VMAF and PSNR.
• Practical expertise with FFMPEG, GPAC, and similar media frameworks.
• Experience with client-side technologies and media libraries such as AVFoundation, VideoToolbox, and video prefetching.
• Familiar with background data fetching techniques.
• Strong data analysis capabilities using SQL.
